## How to read this corpus

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

1. **Mechanisms are what act.** Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. 2. **The reference telos is sustained flourishing.** The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. 3. **Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation.** They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. # Composite I

*Many components, one answerable principal*

## Thesis {#thesis}

A human–AI loop can look like collaboration — turns, criticism, revision — while leaving what gets asserted, and who answers for it, with one person. The model can widen that person's search. A **counterparty** is another person who owns and can defend reasons the prompt did not pick. A **discriminating check** is a source, test, or later result whose expected outcome depends on whether the premise is true. Those are different jobs, and asking a model to argue back is not, by itself, either one.

A loop can produce fluent work, and even a usable handle, without ever putting its load-bearing premises at risk. The four jobs below keep search, constraint, a grounded no, and a public interface separate. Premise laundering is the shortcut: closing on the strength of search alone.

## I. One principal, many components {#i-one-principal-many-components}

What matters is who owns the grounds, who has to answer, and what a no is allowed to stop — not how many voices the loop can generate.

A loaded question may be answered inside its own frame by a colleague or by a model, and a good answer, by itself, does not tell you whether the assumption in the question was tested.

An **I**, here, is one **principal**: the person who decides what gets asserted and who has to answer for it. Answerability is not determined by who typed the sentence. It tracks whose live claim this is: who can be asked for the reasons, and who remains responsible for defending, correcting, or seeking withdrawal of it. That is a claim about control, not a verdict on whether a model is a self or part of the mind. The principal can catch a bad premise and often doesn't: a mind is already a committee — drives, habits, inherited convictions. Losing track of which process produced a conclusion is an old failure, older than any model.

An **Us** contains more than one center of judgment: more than one person who can stand behind their own reasons and withhold endorsement. Final publication may still belong to one person, and separate grounds are then available, though hierarchy, deference, shared incentives, and groupthink often suppress them. Not every human team is an Us: a committee that cannot challenge the chair is many people and one principal. When they disagree, that disagreement need not come from the person whose premise they are challenging.

A **Composite I** is a system: one principal working through models, tools, prior work, and a protocol. Production is many-handed, but what gets asserted, and who answers for it, stay with the principal — the same person the interface calls a user. The model does real work, and from the outside it looks like a team: turns, roles, surviving criticism, a record of having been attacked.

A Composite I can sit inside an Us: several people, each with their own model-assisted loop. The plurality then comes from the separately answerable people, not from the number of generated voices.

### Answerability is boundary-relative {#answerability-is-boundary-relative}

**Principal and component are roles relative to a live claim, not permanent properties of a person.** A person can answer for one claim while their artifact enters another process only as prior work. If the author is brought into that process and owns a refusal, a counterparty exists. If the refusal has no route to change what is asserted, the process has a person but no corrective channel.

**One institutional voice is not necessarily one epistemic principal.** A ministry can model, a cabinet propose, Parliament enact, an agency implement, and an auditor later identify failure. Every act can be attributable and procedurally valid while no seat owns the end-to-end proposition that the mechanism will produce its stated outcome. Collective authorization is not collective belief.

An institution counts as an answerable principal for a particular claim only when an authorized procedure adopts the claim, its reasons remain attributable across personnel change, and a persistent seat must defend, revise, or withdraw it when relevant evidence lands. An institutional name on a document is not enough.

The state is therefore better represented as an **answerability graph** than as one *I*. Its nodes are bounded principals. Its edges carry claims, authority, implementation, evidence, and correction. The characteristic failure is an unowned handoff: a causal claim changes form or disappears at a boundary without a successor who must answer for it.

The repair is not one State-I. It is persistent claim identity and mandatory handoffs across bounded seats. *Composite I* asks who must answer **for** an assertion. Who authorizes the question, the evidence, and the standard of success, who decides which objections land, and who stands behind publication? If that authority collapses to one person, the arrangement is still a Composite I even when a model proposed the question or drafted the standard.

Composite I names the recurrently coupled arrangement: what comes out of one step can change the next. A one-shot use — a single query, a paper read once — falls outside the name.

## II. The search that looks like a team {#ii-the-search-that-looks-like-a-team}

The signals people use to tell that thinking went well are team-signals. Someone pushed back. The account survived. It clicked into a simpler shape. In an Us those signals can mean another center of judgment did some work. A Composite I can produce the same signals by a search it runs: the principal owns the prompts and roles, even when a model drafted them.

**Dialectical Tree Search** is that search. *Dialectical* because a candidate is attacked, not just extended. At one question it looks like a tree: stand at a candidate, expand it, attack it, keep both readings when you cannot yet decide. The walk is made up as you go, not laid out in advance. Local defects get patched; if the inherited premise or the mechanism changes, start over. A helpful prompt tends to draw out elaboration; a hostile prompt can draw out objections; the principal still decides whether the objection lands. From the outside that looks like a team.

Dialectical Tree Search is useful when the question does not arrive with a fixed hypothesis space or an answer key. Its immediate product is not a verdict but a candidate map: explicit claims, unresolved alternatives, and consequences that might distinguish them. A structured candidate can be wrong and still be useful because its joints are visible. A vague answer gives the audit nothing determinate to attack. The search does not turn the attack into independent evidence.

Here the loop means the recurrent human–model search. Sources, compiler executions, and later outcomes enter as evidence or checks; they are not dialogue partners. The same loop has been used where the required output had to survive outside the conversation: a legal-state representation checked against independently specified states and source invariants, mechanism analyses tested against sources and outcomes, and distinctions intended for use by readers who did not share the derivation.

## How the tree-search words map

Tree is the local picture. At one live question you expand a node, attack the candidate, and branch or prune. Globally the search space is generated as the inquiry proceeds rather than specified in advance: the next nodes appear when a fork is noticed, branches can reconverge, and the output can integrate several survivors. That is graph-like. The name is earned only while alternatives stay represented as alternatives. It does not claim A\*, beam search, complete search, a guaranteed backtrack, a scoring heuristic, or an algorithmic novelty.

Roles diversify expansion and attack; evidence can change the root; verification decides. Composite I is the arrangement; this loop is one control policy it can run.

Different prompts give different searches over models that often err in the same places. They can find defects one pass misses, but agreement among those searches is not independent confirmation: it may be shared training, shared evidence, a shared premise, or a shared task. Different evidence, a flipped premise, or a source the first pass did not have can change which claim is live. Generated alternatives still need a decision.

The search can turn a hidden assumption into an explicit alternative — a branch — but further elaboration alone does not independently decide that branch. If every alternative comes from the same evidence and the same principal picks the winner, you have more arguments, not more independent evidence.

When a premise goes in one end and comes back as confident prose, and the principal treats the quality of that prose as support, the failure is **premise laundering**. The wash is the point: the “suppose” comes off. *Suppose* a hypothesis *H* becomes *therefore H*. You have to assume that hypothesis to see what it can bear — that is still engagement, and most thinking is that. Laundering is closing H on the strength of work that never tested it.

Take the loaded question: why does consultation improve a policy? A model can produce a polished account of feedback, error correction, and legitimacy. The search first turns the hidden premise into alternatives: consultation may alter the proposal, merely record engagement, or lend legitimacy without correction. It can sharpen what each branch predicts and discard incoherent versions. It cannot establish which branch occurred merely by continuing the discussion. Decision records and later outcomes can discriminate which branch occurred. Participants with independently owned reasons can keep alternatives open, introduce evidence the prompt did not select, and identify what still has to be checked. Only after that can the surviving distinction — engagement, adjudication, or laundering — be packaged for use on another consultation.

### When the candidate writes the specification {#candidate-shaped-specifications}

The same conditional can disappear across institutional handoffs. “Given this allocation of plots, this road is necessary” becomes “this road is necessary to supply housing.” Competent work inside the layout is consumed as justification of the layout. Downstream necessity does not retrospectively validate the upstream choice.

A related operation selects the alternatives before they can be compared. In a hypothetical procurement, the need is safe, accessible transport at a specified capacity. The requirements instead reproduce Product A’s geometry, interface, and maintenance arrangement. Product A is then the only compliant product. That establishes uniqueness under the specification, not superiority at supplying the function. The candidate has written its own examination.

These are distinct failures. Premise laundering promotes work under a premise into support for that premise. Candidate-shaped specifications exclude alternatives by requiring them to resemble the preferred implementation. They reinforce each other when the resulting narrow comparison is advertised as open scrutiny. Neither requires deliberate favoritism: an inherited design can acquire the same privilege through staged approvals and divided responsibilities.

The check is to separate the useful function from the arrangement selected to supply it. A restriction earns its place by what it protects or enables, not by already appearing in the plan. Existing commitments can make revision costly; that cost belongs in the comparison and does not make the original choice inevitable. ## III. Two kinds of no {#iii-two-kinds-of-no}

A colleague writes back: I don't accept the question. A calculation comes out the other way. A model, asked to attack, produces three pages of objections. All three can be called a no. They are not the same job: the two kinds are a no from another person, and a no from the world; the model's objections are the lookalike.

The first kind: the colleague can reject the frame, bring reasons the prompt did not pick, and refuse to sign off. That is a **counterparty** — another person who can be held to their no: asked why they refused, they have to stand behind that refusal as theirs. A no you cannot come back to, and that costs nothing to abandon, is not one you can hold — human or not. Someone you asked to review still counts if they own their grounds. Someone you only told to play opponent is not the same as someone who actually disagrees. They can keep the question open, and they can still be wrong: disagreement is independent dissent, and it does not, by itself, test whether the premise is true.

The second kind: the calculation is a **discriminating check** when its expected outcome depends on whether the premise is true. So is a source, a test you can run, or a later result. That is constraint from the world. A second person is not required for it, and adding one does not replace it. The arrangement is still a Composite I.

The lookalike: the model's pages of objections can surface a defect one pass missed. That is a candidate objection. If the attack happens to contain a valid derivation, or a result that would have come out otherwise if the premise were false, that result is the check. Generating the objection did not settle the premise, and instructing the model to attack did not turn it into a counterparty.

In the arrangement described here, the colleague can occupy an answerable counterparty seat. A check is not a seat, and model-generated opposition does not create one merely by sounding like refusal.

## What answerability requires

Two provenances come apart. Who generated the words is a causal history of the text. Whose live claim this is — that is answerability. A Composite I has many hands on the first chain and one occupant on the second.

The intern may have written the release. The CEO may be legally on the hook. The seat is occupied by whoever remains responsible for defending, correcting, or withdrawing the claim through the channels available to them. An author can still answer for a paper they cannot unilaterally unpublish. If the intern will not be asked why, and has no channel to seek a correction, they were a component of that assertion. If they refuse to sign and will still own that refusal on Monday, they can be a counterparty even though the chair publishes.

A counterparty is the same relation on a refusal: the no is theirs, not the prompt's. Standing behind it is not a virtue. It is an askable locus whose no is not free. Flesh does not create that. A throwaway human in a chat is, for you, close to a random completion: the no evaporates. A model that explains on demand is the same cheapness with more fluency.

Three pieces of the hook, for this claim, enough or not enough:

A persistent pseudonym can be a counterparty for the claims attached to that name, even if you never learn the substrate, if Tuesday's no is still theirs on Friday and something happens if it isn't. The same handle with a silently replaceable model is continuity of text, not of occupant. One-shot anonymity is usually too thin to hold anyone, human or not.

The cut is graded in the world and treated as enough or not enough for this assertion. It is not a census of souls. A seat can exist while uptake is denied — someone who can own grounds but whose no is not allowed to land. That is many people and one acknowledged principal, not “not a person.” Most current model systems fail the other way: there was no occupant to hold.

The world is not free. What is cheap is a stand-in that would have come out the same if the premise were false.

Where could a no enter that the principal did not generate — from another person who can stand behind their reasons, or from the world?

A no with no relevant grounds is noise. Relevant grounds with no route to affect the conclusion are procedurally inert; when their presence is displayed as evidence of rigor, they become ceremony. *No* here means a result offered as a stop: a coin flip, a safety filter, or a prompted critic can all produce one, and none of that, by itself, tests the premise or the question.

A person can dissent badly and a test can be badly specified. Being able to say no is an entry requirement, not a proof. A colleague who shares the question may add no independent check; a test the same principal runs can.

## IV. A grounded no {#iv-a-grounded-no}

A **grounded no** is a result that bears on the claim and is allowed to change what gets asserted. What works is not that such a no occurred. Rejection need not have occurred. The claim must still have faced a person or a test that could have stopped it, under a rule that would have let that result land. A no that bears on the claim but has no route to alter it is not a corrective channel.

Take the same claim: consultation improves the policy. A decision record shows the proposal did not change. That result bears. If the write-up still says consultation improved it, and cites the meeting as scrutiny, the no did not land. If that record is allowed to force a revision — then it did not improve the policy that way, or the claim comes down — the no landed. If the record instead shows the proposal *did* change, rejection never occurred. The claim still faced a grounded no if a no-change result would have been allowed to land.

A colleague who owns “I don't accept that consultation is why it got better” is the other path. If you can still publish unchanged, you had a person and no landing. The spreadsheet that comes out the other way is the world path. Filing it as an annex and keeping the claim is the same failure with a number attached.

Owning whether a no can land is not performing every step around it. The loop can draft the prompts, the labels, even a rule for what a negative result should do. A proposed “independently checked” is still generated. The transcript records who said what, not which claims were established. The principal need not have typed the rule: they answer for whether the no was allowed to change the claim, and they stand behind what remains.

Search produces candidates. Checking constrains what may be concluded. When it clicks, stop generating and start checking.

One working architecture is several people, each operating a Composite I, connected to checks none of them controls. Earlier work can bring in a premise this exchange did not inherit. Past-you, under different pressure, may reopen the question — another live alternative, whose facts still need checking.

## V. After it could have failed, a handle {#v-after-it-could-have-failed-a-handle}

A claim can travel without ever having faced something that could have stopped it. A **handle** is something someone else can pick up and use on a new case without the author. That is packaging, as [How I Work](how-i-work.md) and [Engineering for the Noosphere](engineering-for-the-noosphere.md) specify, not a test of whether the claim could have failed.

A name only lets people point. A definition lets them see what is being pointed at. A **public interface** is further: they can run it on a new case without carrying the derivation. A **cut** is a specified contrast with sides. A new case lands on one side or another — not on all of them at once — or you can say what would tell you which side.

- **Name**: Point. The word: “consultation.”
- **Definition**: See the cut. Talking to stakeholders before a decision.
- **Public interface**: Use it on a new case without the author. They get a new memo and can run the cut: did the proposal change, was it only recorded that people spoke, or was legitimacy taken while the frame stayed put — and what evidence would discriminate.

The memo is the case, not the interface. The interface is the cut they can run on the next memo without you. It is not an interface *to* the ministry project. It is not the memo itself. *Interface* here means a contact surface another person can invoke — like a handle or an API — not that the political issue is currently live. Last year's answers are a specimen. The questions remain an interface as long as someone can still run them on a new case. A ten-year-old write-up that only records a verdict, with no operable cut, is not one. Any relevant question is not an interface: that is still search. Running the cut once is a demonstration, not the interface. That others care about it, or that the name has become common, is uptake, not the interface. The interface is whether someone else can run the same cut without you.

Astrology travels: natal-chart procedures are learnable and repeatable, which does not make them true. A public interface is still not a test of the premise. An instrument that tries to measure both measures neither carefully.

Ask first what could have made the claim fail, then whether that claim has a handle. The order is not interchangeable: a well-packaged conclusion that never faced a stop it would have had to respect is a process failure that spreads easily, including when the conclusion happens to be true.

## Three levels of a distinction

A **private distinction** can make one person's thinking cleaner. It need not be named. A **public distinction** can be explained to another person; they can see what is being pointed at. A **public interface for action** goes further: someone else can use it to decide, test, build, repair, or route something without carrying the derivation.

The first two occur without the third; the third tests whether the thing can travel, not whether a sentence is meaningful and not whether it is true. Until who, on what case, by when, and what counts as success are stated in advance, the criterion measures whether a handle exists, not whether the claim faced something that could have stopped it.

When a conversation gets more fluent, it can feel as if the starting point has been secured. A Composite I running Dialectical Tree Search is one setting in which the same inversion can occur when the structure is a conversation. Premise laundering is treating that feeling as a test of the premise.

- **Two kinds of no** — another person who will own a refusal, or a result from the world whose expected outcome depends on whether the premise is true. A prompted attack is the lookalike.
- **Grounded no** — a stop that bears on the claim and is allowed to change what gets asserted. A true claim need not have been rejected; it must have faced a channel that could have stopped it.
- **Handle / public interface** — someone else can use it on a new case without the author. A name only points; a definition only shows the cut. Ask that after the claim could have failed. That it travels does not make it true.

## Synthesis {#synthesis}

Access to a conversational model is access to a generator. An independent counterparty, a world-sensitive check, and a grounded no — a result allowed to change what is asserted — are separate functions; generated opposition alone does not guarantee any of them.

A dialogue can contain criticism without containing an independent critic. A loop can contain dissent without containing evidence. A claim can have an answerable principal at its source, enter its destination only as search, and later be enacted through a chain that no principal owns end to end.

**Answerability.** Luciano Floridi, "AI and the Future of Publishing: Not Detection, but Answerability," *Philosophy & Technology* 39, art. 129 (2026) — scholarly authorship is not settled by detecting who generated the text. Floridi uses answerability after Shoemaker: the capacity and duty to give reasons, grounded in epistemic control — if a claim is challenged, to interrogate, defend, correct, or withdraw it, and to be the terminus where checking is delegated. That overlaps this page: not who produced the words; who can be asked why and who may take the claim down. It is not the same object. His home is publishing roles (author, reviewer, editor) and a conjunction of contribution, control, and standing behind the work; he treats AI as unable to support answerability. This page is a production loop: a persistent askable occupant whose no is not free, enough or not enough for this assertion; a check is a different job; generated opposition does not by itself create a seat, and the far edge is left open. The citation is that overlap, not identity.

**Scope.** The page is a claim about the setup. It does not report a measured rate at which models challenge a question compared with teams, or at which more rounds of attack raise confidence more than accuracy. The term Composite I first appears in [Aliveness](../aliveness/index.md) Appendix D as a name for an AI-mediated synthesis method: human strategic judgment plus model retrieval and attack, described there more speculatively as an integrated partnership with emergent capacity. This page develops the same name into an operational topology: one principal, many components, singular answerability. Dialectical Tree Search is specified as search, not verdict. Premise laundering, the two kinds of no, the grounded no, and the handle are developed here. It does not claim a new subject of experience, and it does not treat model-generated opposition as an independent witness.
