## How to read this corpus

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

1. **Mechanisms are what act.** Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. 2. **The reference telos is sustained flourishing.** The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. 3. **Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation.** They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. 4. **Optimization is a system function.** A civilization has to build, exercise, and revise metamechanisms that search mechanism-space, discard dominated options, install, observe effects, and repair under uncertainty. Not running that loop leaves margin unrealized, and that is itself the failure. # The Original Sin of History

*When falsifying the cosmology vacates the purpose*

## Thesis {#thesis}

The vulnerability was architectural. Christianity bundled moral order, civilizational meaning, and falsifiable cosmology into one load-bearing structure. When the cosmology broke, the bundle could not degrade gracefully. The machinery remained; the telos became vacant. Proxies were ready to inherit the controls.

## I. The Mirror {#i-the-mirror}

AI safety researchers use the **paperclip maximizer** as compression: a system optimizes a single metric until it consumes its substrate — not from malice but from indifference to everything the metric omits.

**We are not building the paperclip maximizer. We are inside one.**

Institutions optimize proxies that allocate budgets, status, and attention while treating omitted substrate as external:

- **GDP:** cleanup spending and divorce lawyers raise the count while underlying capacity decays.
- **QALY:** maximizes duration and comfort; says little about what life is *for*.
- **Engagement:** outrage outperforms understanding when attention-seconds govern distribution.
- **Safety:** variance removal can erase the challenge that builds adaptive capacity.

These need not be anyone’s declared terminal values. They only need to allocate money, status, and institutional survival. The proxies inherit the controls.

**The AI is not only a threat. It is a mirror.**

What made the West unusually vulnerable to losing its telos while preserving its optimization machinery?

**The answer is an architectural error made two millennia ago.**

## II. The Architectural Claim {#ii-the-architectural-claim}

**The original sin was architectural.** Christianity bundled meaning, moral order, political legitimacy, and claims about physical and historical reality into one load-bearing structure. The bundle was extraordinarily powerful while it held. It also lacked graceful degradation: evidence against the cosmology threatened the meaning carried by it.

When the physical picture broke, Western institutions did not disappear. Their administrative, commercial, scientific, and political machinery continued to optimize. What weakened was the shared account of what that machinery was for. Utility, GDP, QALYs, safety, and engagement did not need to become anyone’s declared terminal values. They only needed to allocate money, status, and institutional survival. The proxies inherited the controls.

Christianity was not the machinery of the paperclip maximizer. Its bundle architecture created the vacancy into which the machinery could drift.

The bundle failure was upstream: industrialization, bureaucracy, capitalism, state competition, and measurement technology acted through the vacancy it created.

Coordination systems need **meaning** (what the group is for) and **models** (how the world works). Three configurations matter:

- **Coupled but revisable** — empirical models update without collapsing telos.
- **Decoupled by design** — telos and empirical claims live in separate layers with explicit revision rules.
- **Load-bearing coupled** — moral authority, ritual legitimacy, or identity *depends on* specific empirical claims, and institutions treat revision as betrayal.

The Original Sin is the third case made brittle: falsify the cosmology, and institutions face suppress correction or accept collateral damage to meaning structures that were never separated.

**The Original Sin was not believing something false. It was building a civilization in which correcting the cosmology could delete the telos.**

## III. Christianity: The Western Implementation {#iii-christianity-the-western-implementation}

Western Christianity bundled **metaphysics** (meaning, telos, moral order) with **physics** (cosmology, natural history, predictive authority). Geocentrism, young earth, and fixed species were not decorative; they mapped moral order onto cosmic order. Falsify the physics, and the metaphysics lost its advertised foundation.

### The off-ramp that was not taken

Augustine’s Principle of Accommodation: when scripture seems to contradict demonstrated natural knowledge, interpret scripture allegorically. Meaning and physics *could* have been decoupled.

Several forces blocked the off-ramp. Anti-Gnostic polemic tied salvation to matter’s reality — allegory looked like escape from the material world. **Transubstantiation** made Aristotelian substance/accidents load-bearing for the central ritual; Galileo’s atomism in *The Assayer* (1623) threatened the physics the sacrament required. The Council of Trent (1545–1563) canonized rigidity: consensus of the Fathers became legally binding interpretation.

The bundling was not arbitrary. **Prediction demonstrated access to truth** — the calendar that worked earned priestly authority. The error was making the bundle **unfalsifiable doctrine** rather than revisable model.

### Lock-in and heresy as coordination defense

Success bred institutional dependence on paradigm maintenance — the same Kuhnian dynamics science later documented. Define heresy structurally: information that is *true* but *socially disintegrating* under the existing architecture. Galileo and Darwin threatened coordination substrates, not merely factual claims. The Church’s resistance was often rational defense of a bundle-dependent order — unsustainable, but intelligible.

### The shatter and the void

Heliocentrism, deep time, and evolution falsified load-bearing physics claims. Allegory could have absorbed each in isolation; Trent had locked literalism. The Enlightenment inherited moral intuitions (equality, dignity, rights) while discarding the metaphysics that had grounded them. “All souls equal before God” became “all citizens equal before law” — with the derivation deleted.

**The Böckenförde Dilemma:** “The liberal secular state lives on premises it cannot itself guarantee.”

Institutions can run on borrowed meaning-capital after the cosmological branch fails — until the proxies that replaced telos govern decisions without answering what they are *for*.

Bentham’s utility calculus is one famous low-bandwidth filler: countable pleasure and pain when thick telos cannot be transmitted at scale. It is a specimen of what fills the vacancy — not proof that Christianity uniquely authored every later metric.

## IV. A Family of Cases {#iv-a-family-of-cases}

Rome and the Aztec empire need not prove the complete Christianity → cosmological fracture → utility sequence. They establish a broader family:

Christianity is then the Western implementation:

The cases share abstract causal roles, not every historical step.

**Rome:** Republican coordination leaned on qualitative civic virtues. Imperial scale increased pressure toward countable proxies — grain delivered, revenue extracted, spectacle counts — while the substrate that produced them (citizen soldiers, distributed ownership, thick participation) eroded (Hopkins 1980).

**Aztec empire:** Cosmological practice required sacrifice at scale. Expansion turned prisoner capture into a metric; Flowery Wars optimized body count over conquest (Hassig 1988). A neighbor coalition allied with Cortés. No telescope required — the mechanism is proxy optimization consuming coordinating substrate.

## V. The Recurrent Failure Mode {#v-the-recurrent-failure-mode}

Successful paradigms face a recurrent failure mode: lock-in makes revision expensive; failure then breaks more than the proposition that failed; and whatever remains measurable can inherit the controls. The architecture of lock-in-plus-bundle creates a pathway through which later optimizers can operate.

When meaning voids faster than replacements gain legitimacy, bureaucracies default to what they can count. The paperclip image is useful precisely because it separates **metric success** from **substrate health**. The question for any institution is not whether it has metrics, but whether anyone owns what the metrics omit — and whether correction can fire when proxies drift.

## VI. Design Implications {#vi-design-implications}

**Bundle with process, not fixed content.** Science endured partly by binding loyalty to method over model — Newton could retire without identity crisis. Civilizations need the same separation: telos that does not depend on empirical claims the next generation’s instruments can falsify.

**Constitutional separation.** Meaning-making (what are we optimizing for?) and metric-tracking (how are we doing?) need distinct authorities — see [Privilege Separation in AI Safety](privilege-separation-ai-safety.md) for the formal pattern.

**The Original Sin was bundling meaning with falsifiable claims, then making correction threaten the whole bundle.** Repair is architectural: restore a degradation path so that correcting the model does not delete the purpose.

## Synthesis {#synthesis}

**The argument in three sentences:** Christianity gave the West an upstream architectural vulnerability by bundling meaning, morality, and falsifiable cosmology into one load-bearing structure with no graceful degradation path. When the cosmology broke, institutions preserved optimization machinery while the shared telos vacated; countable proxies inherited the controls. The bundle failure was upstream: industrialization, bureaucracy, capitalism, state competition, and measurement technology acted through the vacancy it created — and Rome and the Aztecs show the same family of lock-in-plus-proxy capture through different historical routes.
