## How to read this corpus

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

1. **Mechanisms are what act.** Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. 2. **The reference telos is sustained flourishing.** The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. 3. **Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation.** They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. 4. **Optimization is a system function.** A civilization has to build, exercise, and revise metamechanisms that search mechanism-space, discard dominated options, install, observe effects, and repair under uncertainty. Not running that loop leaves margin unrealized, and that is itself the failure. # Values Are Replicators

*You don't have values. Values have you.*

## Thesis {#thesis}

Your values are not possessions. They are replicators that inhabit hosts: transmitted, mutated, selected, and preserved through identity and social enforcement. Replicator status is compatible with truth, symbiotic function, and deliberate revision. Audit is against substrate maintenance, not against the feeling of ownership.

## I. The Class Claim {#i-the-class-claim}

"My deeply held values" carries an implicit ontology: values are possessions. You have them the way you have shoes. You chose them, or inherited them, or reasoned your way to them. They belong to you.

The replicator framework proposes a narrower, testable alternative. **Some value complexes behave like replicators**—culturally transmitted patterns that reproduce, mutate, recruit carriers, compete for attention and institutional substrate, and differentially persist. Cultural transmission is often reconstructive rather than gene-like; the claim is population-level selection over transmissible patterns. The substrate is neurons and culture instead of cells and DNA.

This is a *class* claim: a complex qualifies when transmission, mutation, selection, and identity-protective preservation are observable. Reflective revision, deliberate adoption, and reasoned rejection remain real causal processes. Replicator status is compatible with symbiotic, benign, or parasitic host effects; the class test does not settle which.

To apply the class claim to a specific value complex, specify: the cultural variant; its host or carrier; the copying or reconstruction pathway; the relevant population; the fitness measure (adoption, retention, institutionalization, reproduction, or something else); the time horizon; and evidence that differential transmission is driving the observed distribution. Without those specifications, "replicator" collapses into a universal redescriptive term.

## II. What Makes Values Different from Preferences {#ii-what-makes-values-different-from-preferences}

Not everything you care about is a replicator. Preferences are substrate-level responses without replicator dynamics. Nobody forms an identity around liking chocolate. Nobody punishes friends for preferring vanilla. Nobody feels existential crisis when switching from coffee to tea.

Values are different. They exhibit five properties that preferences lack:

**1. Transmissibility pressure.** You *want* others to share your values. Not casually — urgently. The vegan at the dinner table, the libertarian at the party, the progressive at Thanksgiving. The compulsion to convert is not always a personality flaw. In replicator-class cases, it is the reproductive drive expressing through the host.

**2. Identity integration.** You ARE your values. Changing a value is not like changing a preference — it's an identity crisis. "I used to believe in equality but now I don't" requires reconstructing your self-model. "I used to prefer tea but now I prefer coffee" requires nothing. In replicator-class cases, the pattern has fused with the host's identity, making removal feel like self-destruction.

**3. Social enforcement.** The group punishes defection from shared values. Not gently — with social death, ostracism, career destruction. The punishment is disproportionate to the "disagreement" because it's not always about the proposition. In replicator-class cases, it's about the integrity of the replicator ecology. A defector is a cell that stopped cooperating with the organism.

**4. Immune system.** Values come equipped with conversation-terminators, emotional aversion to counter-evidence, and automatic counter-argument generation. "That's racist." "That's elitist." "The science is settled." "Have you read the sequences?" These aren't always arguments. In replicator-class cases, they're antibodies. They fire before evaluation, preventing the threatening information from reaching the host's reasoning capacity.

**5. Self-model construction.** The replicator builds a narrative about WHY you hold these positions. "I'm rational." "I'm moral." "I follow the evidence." "I care about people." The narrative is not always the cause of the value — in replicator-class cases, it's camouflage. It makes colonization harder to notice by providing a story of autonomous choice.

A value complex fits this replicator class only when it has observable differential transmission and persistence alongside these identity-protective reproductive dynamics. A complex that lacks them does not. The feeling that values are "yours" can be property \#5 doing its job; diagnosis still requires the full profile.

## III. Four Levels, Not One {#iii-four-levels-not-one}

The word "value" conflates multiple categorically different claim types. [One essay](values-arent-subjective.md) identified six. The replicator framework adds how those types bundle and transmit — and it's where many political disputes live, though not exclusively.

The critical error: collapsing all four levels into one category and declaring the whole stack "subjective" because the preference level is subjective. This smuggles the subjectivity of chocolate-vs-vanilla upward to cover the objectivity of growth-vs-stagnation — and in between, it hides the replicator level entirely.

Many political disputes involve value complexes that *can* exhibit replicator dynamics — equality, freedom, tradition, progress, nationalism, cosmopolitanism. Some of these complexes are symbiotic: they maintain trust, transmit workable knowledge, or preserve institutions that serve their hosts. Some are benign: they spread without degrading substrate. Some are parasitic: they spread while consuming capital stocks their hosts need. Case-by-case host-effect evidence decides which.

## IV. Constraints and Agency {#iv-constraints-and-agency}

Value formation sits inside a nested constraint stack:

Each level constrains the next. Physics determines which biological configurations are viable. Biology determines which genetic dispositions get expressed. Genetics shapes which memetic environments you'll thrive in. Your memetic environment shapes which replicators can reach you. Reflective revision operates at the top—but not in a vacuum. You can curate information, select community, cultivate practice, and reason your way out of patterns you notice. That is real agency. It is also structurally situated.

You can choose tea over coffee (substrate-level, physics doesn't care). You cannot choose whether growth or stagnation produces civilizational persistence (axiological-level, physics has already decided). And replicator-class dynamics can make some value shifts harder than they look from inside—because identity fusion, social enforcement, and immune response are doing work you may not yet see. Hard is not the same as impossible. Ecology management and reflective revision are both causal levers.

"Values" = the current state of the gene-meme-physics constraint stack as experienced from the inside. Not a separate ontological category. Not always possessions. Not always infections. A snapshot of which patterns currently occupy your particular substrate—some adopted reflectively, some inherited, some selected by transmission dynamics you can later audit.

## V. Seven Implications {#v-seven-implications}

**1. "Choosing values" and "managing ecology" are both real.** You can create conditions that favor certain replicators — curate your information environment, select your community, cultivate specific practices. You can also reflect, test, and revise positions on evidence. Ecology management shapes what reaches you. Reflective revision filters what you keep. A farmer doesn't choose which crops grow ex nihilo; he creates conditions where the desired crops outcompete the weeds. You can farm your memetic ecology *and* inspect individual plants.

**2. "Values are subjective" can function as a defensive replicator.** When it prevents external evaluation of the incumbent distribution, it protects replicator fitness from audit. "You can't judge my values" translates to: "don't apply selection pressure to my current ecology." The meme doesn't need to be true to be effective. It needs to prevent exactly the kind of analysis that would reveal which value complexes are symbiotic and which are parasitic.

**3. Democratic will samples a replicator ecology.** "The will of the people" = the current distribution of value complexes across the population, weighted by turnout and institutional filters. Voting on values measures replicator fitness — transmissibility, emotional resonance, identity-validation — alongside whatever substantive judgment voters bring. The most electorally successful complexes are not always the most adaptive ones. Transmissibility and function are different properties optimized by different selection pressures.

**4. Many "value debates" ask the wrong question.** Debating whether equality or freedom is "more important" treats the dispute as a terminal-value ranking. Often the better questions are empirical: What selection pressures produced these complexes? What ecological conditions favor each? What are the downstream effects on the specified host? Which configurations correlate with substrate maintenance over the relevant horizon? These questions do not eliminate philosophy. They change its inputs.

**5. Argumentation is often the wrong intervention.** Arguments target the self-model (property \#5). Replicator-class dynamics live deeper — in identity, social enforcement, and immune response. Arguing against someone's values can trigger the immune system (property \#4), which generates counter-arguments faster than you can produce arguments. You're fighting antibodies, not necessarily the underlying claim. The argument doesn't fail because it's wrong. It fails because it's attacking the wrong layer.

**6. The self-model can be the deepest camouflage.** A sophisticated self-model can make identity-protective dynamics harder to notice. An explicit authority-follower ("I follow my pastor") can notice the authority-following. A rationalist ("I follow the evidence") may find it harder to notice when that identity is doing protective work. This is a hypothesis about identity-protective sophistication, not a ranking of intelligence or a presumption that any particular disagreement proves colonization.

**7. Physics supplies an external constraint.** Evaluation from inside an ecology is vulnerable to ecology-installed criteria. Physics supplies constraints on persistence: not "which values feel right?" (ecology-determined), nor "which values does my authority endorse?" (authority-determined), but ["which value-configurations keep a specified host inside a viable region over a specified horizon?"](values-arent-subjective.md) (physics-constrained). This is the [Hume bypass](hume-was-right.md): not deriving ought from is, but deriving constraints from physics. Residual commitments among physics-compatible configurations remain explicit.

## VI. Benign, Symbiotic, and Parasitic {#vi-benign-symbiotic-and-parasitic}

Replicator dynamics are not moral verdicts. They describe transmission mechanics. The moral and civilizational question is what a complex does to its host and horizon.

**Benign replicators** spread without obvious substrate cost. Fandom cultures, fashion cycles, and many recreational commitments propagate with identity fusion but do not obviously erode capital stocks. They still meet the class criteria when transmission and immune dynamics are present. Benign does not mean "not a replicator." It means the replicator-host relationship is not currently degrading the substrate you care about.

**Symbiotic replicators** spread *because* they help their hosts—or the ecology those hosts depend on. Hand-washing norms, literacy campaigns, engineering safety culture, and scientific-method commitments propagate through teaching, identity, and enforcement. They use the same reproductive toolkit as parasitic complexes. The difference is functional: hosts and ecologies that adopt them gain capability, trust, or persistence they would lose without them. Henrich's account of culturally transmitted know-how is largely a catalogue of symbiotic replicators: patterns too complex to reinvent individually, transmitted because groups that carry them survive better.

**Parasitic replicators** spread while degrading the substrate their hosts need. Present-optimization norms that suppress fertility. Identity packages that punish reality-testing. Coordination technologies captured by complexes that consume institutional capital faster than they maintain it. The diagnosis requires the profile in [§II](#ii-what-makes-values-different-from-preferences) *and* evidence that prevalence correlates with substrate degradation—declining complexity, eroding capital stocks, demographic collapse.

Every civilization is a replicator ecology whether it acknowledges this or not. Every civilization does memetic farming — through education, media, legal incentives, cultural institutions — whether it calls it that or not. The question has never been whether to manage the ecology. The question is whether the management is conscious and aligned with civilizational persistence, or unconscious and optimized for transmissibility alone.

The "marketplace of ideas" metaphor is misleading when treated as self-correcting: ideas compete on transmissibility, emotional resonance, and identity-validation — not only on truth. A catchy false meme can outcompete a boring true one. Spread and accuracy decouple unless the selection environment rewards accuracy. Democratic ecologies can amplify complexes optimized for coalition size—[egalitarian utility-maximization](the-original-sin-of-history.md), present-optimization, variance denial—while the bundle still mixes symbiotic and parasitic components. The bundle is what makes audit hard.

## VII. The Nihilism Trap {#vii-the-nihilism-trap}

There's an obvious danger in this analysis. "All values are just replicators" → "nothing matters" → nihilism. Pure deconstruction without reconstruction. The acid that dissolves everything including itself.

This overreach is itself a failure mode. Symbiotic replicators are load-bearing. Reflective agency remains a causal lever. Nihilism suppresses investment in the very complexes a civilization needs.

The framework's answer: **acknowledge replicator dynamics where the evidence supports them AND maintain functional commitment to the complexes that produce substrate persistence.** "These patterns propagate like replicators AND they're the ones this host needs." Debunking clears parasitic memes; the surgeon removes the tumor, not the organ.

The distinction is conditional: a value complex whose prevalence correlates with substrate degradation is a candidate parasitic replicator; one whose prevalence correlates with substrate maintenance is a candidate symbiotic one; one that spreads without measurable cost is a candidate benign one. The diagnosis requires the profile described in [§II](#ii-what-makes-values-different-from-preferences) and evidence that permits counterexamples. Physics supplies a persistence constraint for that audit.

## VIII. What Changes {#viii-what-changes}

**Test before you diagnose.** Before calling a value complex parasitic, run the class criteria: differential transmission, identity fusion, enforcement, immune response, self-model—and then ask what it does to the substrate over the relevant horizon.

**Stop treating replicator dynamics as an excuse not to argue.** Some disputes are substantive. Some immune responses are protecting falsehoods. The framework tells you which layer you're hitting, not which side is automatically right.

**Start designing ecologies.** If governance is replicator-ecology management — and it always has been, whether acknowledged or not — then the design question is: what selection environment favors symbiotic over parasitic complexes? Not by picking winners through censorship, but by designing conditions where truth-tracking memes have competitive advantage. The institution doesn't decide what's true — it creates conditions where truth has higher fitness.

**Start with yourself.** Understanding replicator-class dynamics gives you a diagnostic tool: when you feel the compulsion to convert, the identity-threat of counter-evidence, the immune response firing before evaluation — you can ask whether a replicator profile is active, without assuming you are merely a host. Reflective revision remains available. Ecology management remains available. Personal memetic hygiene is noticing the pattern early enough to test it.

Replicator-class dynamics will keep operating whether or not you understand them. The question is whether you audit and manage the ecology.

## Sources and Notes

**Dawkins and memetics:** Richard Dawkins, *The Selfish Gene* (1976). The foundational insight: replicators as the unit of selection, with organisms as vehicles. Dawkins coined "meme" as the cultural analogue of the gene. The concept was productive but the field of memetics largely stalled — partly because it lacked a selection criterion beyond "what spreads." This framework adds a missing piece: specify host, horizon, and substrate effects—not just transmissibility.

**Cultural evolution:** Joseph Henrich, *The Secret of Our Success* (2015) and *The WEIRDest People in the World* (2020). Henrich's work on cultural evolution, prestige bias, and the co-evolution of psychology and institutions provides the empirical backbone for how replicators propagate. His key finding: most human knowledge is culturally transmitted, not individually reasoned — which is what the replicator framework predicts for symbiotic cases.

**Costly signaling:** Amotz Zahavi, *The Handicap Principle* (1975). The formal theory behind why absurd beliefs bind better than true ones. If a signal is cheap, it's unreliable. Costly signals (believing something that makes you look stupid to outsiders) are reliable precisely because they're expensive — they can only be sustained by genuine commitment.

**The five replicator properties** are derived from standard evolutionary biology applied to cultural transmission. Transmissibility pressure = reproductive drive. Identity integration = host-modification for replicator benefit. Social enforcement = immune response at group level. Immune system = counter-adaptation against competing replicators. Self-model construction = camouflage (crypsis in biological terms).

**The constraint stack** (physics → biology → genetics → memetics → reflective revision) extends the gene-culture coevolution framework of Boyd and Richerson (*Culture and the Evolutionary Process*, 1985) by adding physics as the bottom constraint and treating reflective revision as a real top-level causal process, not a negligible residual.

**Identity fusion and immune response:** The analysis of how values integrate with identity and generate automatic defensive responses draws on Jonathan Haidt's *The Righteous Mind* (2012) for moral foundations theory and Dan Kahan's cultural cognition thesis for how group identity determines evidence evaluation. **Ecology management vs. marketplace of ideas:** The critique of the "marketplace of ideas" as ecologically naive connects to Cass Sunstein's work on information cascades and group polarization. Markets optimize for what sells, not what's true. Information markets with no quality filter optimize for virality — which selects for emotional activation, not accuracy.

## Synthesis {#synthesis}

**The argument in three sentences:** Some value complexes exhibit replicator-class dynamics—transmission pressure, identity fusion, enforcement, immune defense, and self-model construction—and the claim is testable with observable criteria. Replicators can be benign, symbiotic, or parasitic depending on their effects on a specified host and horizon; reflective agency remains a real causal lever. The productive move is to audit complexes and design selection environments that favor symbiotic over parasitic persistence.
