Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. The opener swaps chlorine for immigration and says: name an objective and the question becomes engineering.

The live fight it just quoted is compassion versus fiscal responsibility. Those are two objectives, not two models of the same objective. "Maximize immigrant welfare" and "maximize GDP per capita" and "maximize civilizational persistence" are listed as if they were interchangeable illustrations. They are not. They produce different feasible sets.

If the thing people are actually fighting about is which of those to declare, "nobody computes" is a misread of a large leftover, not a missing calculation.

Chlorine arrives with a forced name: keep people from dying of the water. Immigration does not. Prosperity, safety, and stability can be jointly declared and still not pick a level.

The leftover is whether those three, once declared, close enough of the fight that the rest is engineering — or whether declaring them is the fight the opener already quoted as compassion versus fiscal responsibility.

I don't know how this page would count a case where those three goals are shared and a number still isn't picked. If every such case gets filed as "they didn't really share the goals" or "they still haven't computed," the leftover can't show up. That's the hole. Stopping there.

Section IV's prevalence claim rests on three different measurements: voters versus economists on what-would-happen questions, unrelated policy positions clustering into party platforms, and deliberative polls converging after a briefing.

None of those is the leftover after people who already have models compute under a named objective. They are three other things. If prevalence is a hypothesis, the evidence has to be about the leftover, not about the public being uninformed.

Caplan's survey is the same "what would happen if" questions to voters and PhD economists. The gap shows the public is holding a different model. It does not show that economists, once they have computed, agree.

The page's own list — how trade works, what causes unemployment, whether the economy is improving — is still a fight among people with models. If those surviving fights are the ones that get called values in legislatures, the voter-economist gap does not measure the leftover.

Huemer says if values were independent, abortion would not predict gun control. Positions cluster, so it must be tribe driving empirical beliefs.

A coherent package also clusters. One that wants abortion rights, gun rights, and no wage floor points the other way from the two US parties. Two-party bundling predicts the same table Huemer treats as a refutation of independent values. Clustering is not a measurement of empirical error.

Fishkin's result is: give people a briefing and a chance to question specialists, and preferences converge.

Sharing a model produces agreement. That is not the same as having found how the policy actually works. A constructed briefing can produce the same drop in polarization. The experiment does not separate those.

The 340-year story treats OGAS and Cybersyn as the same kind of object as "compute the mechanism, drop dominated options."

OGAS was a nationwide planning network. Cybersyn was a real-time factory coordination system. Section VI says the proposal is not a planner of answers. If the historical killings are of planners, they do not explain why the thing in VI would be killed. They explain why a different object died.

The same page lists computations that finished: runway lengths, drug trials, the Taylor Rule, chlorine levels. Those were not terminated before completion. They are the chlorine-test cases.

So "every attempt was terminated" is about a specific lineage — Leibniz to OGAS — not about computing policy. The immune-system story then explains a failure mode section VI says it is not in.

Section VI: current policy computes most answers as zero — no estimate of social capital, no model of demographic sustainability.

Section VIII: below-replacement fertility has been tracked for decades; pension insolvency is a computed answer the political system refuses to act on.

Those are two diagnoses. Missing numbers, and numbers that already exist and do not move votes. Pricing the cost of inaction and publishing it is the second diagnosis's repair. It does not repair the first, and it is the same publication the pension forecast already is.

Then the informational flag is a new copy of a number that already has copies.

I don't know which diagnosis the Authority is for. If the problem is missing models, the job is to build them. If the problem is ignored models, a new publisher of the same forecast is not a different machine. The page writes both as one fix.
