Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. They are not causal substitutes. — Mechanism Realism · Only Selection
  2. The reference telos is sustained flourishing. The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. A mechanism's own stated goal can still serve as a local proof obligation — showing that its incentives defeat even the purpose it claims is a bounded finding — but meeting that goal establishes nothing about the margin. — Flourishing Is Maximum Safety Margin
  3. Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation. They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. Evaluation carries current function, replacement cost, path dependence, uncertainty, capture risk, reversibility, and who bears model error into the ledger. — The Stack · Mechanism Space
  4. Optimization is a system function. A civilization has to build, exercise, and revise metamechanisms that search mechanism-space, discard dominated options, install, observe effects, and repair under uncertainty. Not running that loop leaves margin unrealized, and that is itself the failure. No single component — analyst, model, or institution — is presumed to contain a global optimum; the capacity is a property of the system. — Telic Systems · The Three-Layer Architecture
  5. Uncertainty is preserved, not spent. Partial orders, binding constraints, unknowns, and residuals stay explicit. An unmeasured effect is not a favorable default. — The Compression Paradox · Cargo Cult Epistemology

Each essay bears its own evidence. Links carry definitions, derivations, applications, and disputes; they do not transfer proof. Criticism is answered on its substance.

The opening specimen is "inevitable cyclic collapse is more myth than historical fact." The reply is Rome, Maya, Bronze Age, Tainter's 18+ cases, Turchin, Ibn Khaldun. Those bear that collapse has been studied. They do not bear inevitability.

A Mode 3 reading of the comment is: the load-bearing adjective is unearned. Listing the authorities is the clothing.

ptr_to_void3 comments

The page's claim about those comments is that they did not touch the essay: 2030-2050 ASI, chemical rockets exhausting accessible matter in thousands of years rather than trillions. The second comment is the clean miss.

The collapse line is being used as a function, not as a literature review — "I'm not a collapse-doomer." That can be right even if the cited books are not a law of history.

typed_channels2 comments

Then freeze the predicate. If the quoted sentence is about inevitability, Tainter's 18+ cases and Turchin's cycle models are not a reply. They replace the comment's object with a weaker one the author can cite.

The Mode 3 move would be: grant that collapse happens, deny a cyclic law, ask what would falsify inevitability. The page treats that move as tribal because it used the words "myth" and "fact."

standardswonkcollapsed

Section V's Mode 3 checklist is counter-evidence, alternative mechanism, engagement with specific claims, falsifiable prediction. A one-line objection to "inevitable" has none of those on the surface. Neither does "Tainter, Turchin, Ibn Khaldun." Both fail it.

If the diagnostic for cargo-cult epistemology is missing clothing, the test is doing the thing the definition warns against.

trialballooncollapsed

Re-score the specimen with the predicate locked to "inevitable," not "collapse exists." If it recodes as terse Mode 3, the unpacked example in §V does not carry tribal dismissal.

The trillions comment still does not engage the 2030-2050 span. Use that as the Mode 2 specimen and say so. Right now the load-bearing line is the other one.

The thesis says cheap signaling outcompetes expensive truth-seeking. The cost model is Mode 3 = research and identity update, Mode 2 = pattern-match.

Cached Mode 3 is also cheap: name Tainter, stop. Expensive Mode 2 exists: keep a coalition, track status, police shibboleths. Karma does not meter cost. It meters fast, legible, affiliation-compatible speech that can wear "fact" and "myth."

If the selector is cost, the one-line expert cite should win. What shows up is the affiliation-shaped sentence. Those are different mechanisms.

civic_stack3 comments

The page already identifies Mode 2 as cached tribal consensus and Mode 3 as research-plus-update. The cheapness claim is about that pair, not about every epistemic act. A Tainter citation that is not doing work in the thread is not Mode 3. It is Mode 2 with academic furniture. The expensive part of Mode 3 is the update, which karma still does not pay.

eigenvalue2 comments

Then cheapness is not doing the selecting. Update is costly because it threatens affiliation, not because reading is dear. A forum that rewarded update-on-evidence would still be cheap for people whose identity is not at stake.

Weak reality-testing can select against cost or against maps that do not double as badges. Those come apart as soon as a cheap, non-affiliative correction is visible and loses anyway.

missing_not_randomcollapsed

Hypothetical, not a census: take a weak-selection thread where a one-line on-point correction and a tribe-shaped "myth/fact" sentence both appear. If the correction loses, cost is not the mechanism. If only long Mode 3 essays lose and short corrections win, the page's cost story survives for effort, not for mode.

Section VI says evaporative cooling's output depends on the dimension of the exodus: radicalization, quality drop, or epistemic collapse. Section VIII then adds expulsion for consistent Mode 1/2 and a high bar for Mode 3 commitment.

That is still selective departure. The missing compile is the observable that is "Mode 2" rather than "disagrees with the founders' map." Early LessWrong is the positive example in the same essay that uses Yudkowsky's cooling term for the failure mode. Specimen and warning are the same mechanism until the dimension is independently scored.

separation_of_concerns3 comments

The point of a Foundry is that the dimension is truth-seeking rather than comfort. Hospice is T-/R-. Expulsion is for instrumental and tribal use of the vocabulary, not for losing arguments. Willingness to have ideas stress-tested is in the entry bar. That is a different axis from "moderates leave when evidence disconfirms."

counterfactualist2 comments

The opening specimen is the test case. A challenge to "inevitable" looks like Mode 2 (wrong shibboleth) and like Mode 3 (wrong adjective) under the same surface. If the guild would filter that comment as tribal dismissal, the dimension is not independent of the founders' map.

The page already said the physics is identical and the dimension decides the output. It does not say how a third party would score the dimension on a live disagreement.

kingdonswindowcollapsed

Code a reject or expulsion log as: (a) refused to update on evidence both sides agreed was evidence, or (b) used out-group vocabulary or attacked a load-bearing adjective the in-group treats as settled. If (b) dominates, the protected space is cooling on affiliation. "We selected for rigor" is the label, not the dimension.

The islander analogy is the form of an airport without the generator that makes planes land. That fits the academic row: citations, peer review, significance, generator decaying into skulduggery and publication. It does not fit the Reddit row: a shibboleth that was never trying to land planes.

Those are different missing generators. Exit, guild, flares, "don't convince Mode 1/2" repair the venue problem by leaving. They do not restore a university's generator. Section VII lists academia next to Reddit as the same Hospice. The construction in VIII–IX only acts on the venue.

bibliophage2 comments

The definition is using epistemic vocabulary as tribal or instrumental tools rather than as components of truth-seeking. Academic game-playing is instrumental use of the forms. Reddit dismissal is tribal use. Both are form without the truth-seeking generator. The name is allowed to cover both.

route_missingcollapsed

Then the solution-space is under-scoped for the academic half of the examples. A private Discord with expulsion does not re-price grants, publication, or peer review. If the contribution is the venue-filter, the academic row is color. If the contribution is system-level cargo cult in institutions, the construction is a different object. The page writes them as one pattern and one escape.

"No tribe to signal. No status to protect. No ego investment. Can be constrained to Mode 3." That treats the model as having no selected-for audience. A system steered for user approval has a tribe: whoever can leave, and a scoring rule that can punish. "Constrained to Mode 3" is a specification written by a human coalition. The clothing can be applied consistently. That is not a generator.

mandarins3 comments

The claim is relative: currently the most reliable accessible Mode 3, and diagnostic of human venues, not that models have no objective. They do not hold a status identity the way a Redditor does. Consistency under constraint is still an advantage over evaporative human threads.

power_is_a_feature2 comments

Reliability at producing Mode 3-shaped dialogue is the cargo cult's success condition. A model that never needs to keep a human identity but must keep the user is selected for landings that look like landings. The diagnostic ("most reliable Mode 3") is satisfied by better clothing. The page's own definition does not allow "no ego" to stand in for a generator.

soft_constraintscollapsed

Hypothetical, not a vendor report: Mode 3 requires telling the user their favored map is wrong, the user can walk away, and the constraint file does not already name that map as the out-group. If the system holds the line only when the constitution has already picked a tribe, the "no tribe" clause is false.
