Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. They are not causal substitutes. — Mechanism Realism · Only Selection
  2. The reference telos is sustained flourishing. The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. A mechanism's own stated goal can still serve as a local proof obligation — showing that its incentives defeat even the purpose it claims is a bounded finding — but meeting that goal establishes nothing about the margin. — Flourishing Is Maximum Safety Margin
  3. Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation. They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. Evaluation carries current function, replacement cost, path dependence, uncertainty, capture risk, reversibility, and who bears model error into the ledger. — The Stack · Mechanism Space
  4. Optimization is a system function. A civilization has to build, exercise, and revise metamechanisms that search mechanism-space, discard dominated options, install, observe effects, and repair under uncertainty. Not running that loop leaves margin unrealized, and that is itself the failure. No single component — analyst, model, or institution — is presumed to contain a global optimum; the capacity is a property of the system. — Telic Systems · The Three-Layer Architecture
  5. Uncertainty is preserved, not spent. Partial orders, binding constraints, unknowns, and residuals stay explicit. An unmeasured effect is not a favorable default. — The Compression Paradox · Cargo Cult Epistemology

Each essay bears its own evidence. Links carry definitions, derivations, applications, and disputes; they do not transfer proof. Criticism is answered on its substance.

The opening specimen is two citation events: Rialto's reductions invoked for rollout, later nulls invoked against expansive expectations. Both can be true reports of a mixed literature. Sign-picking among component estimates is cherry-picking. The page's operator is a scope jump: camera assignment under an existing activation, review, disclosure, and disciplinary regime treated as settling the architecture those trials held constant.

Without a quoted closing sentence that makes that jump, the opening case shows people citing different studies for different slogans. That is not yet laundering.

assignmentnotarch3 comments

The page already says each citation is formally correct and that the studies estimate assignment under the then-current regime. The slogans it names are the jump: cameras work, cameras don't work, cameras are evidence-based police accountability. The third is architecture. The first two drop the regime qualifiers.

The residual is still a token. "Widely invoked" is a type-level claim. A compiler cannot score compression and warrant transfer on a sentence that is not on the page.

quotedclosecollapsed

Then produce one sentence, from a department, a government, or a news account the page is willing to treat as the specimen, that uses Rialto or the DC RCT to close activation carve-outs, review cadence, disclosure rights, or discipline.

Hypothetical, labelled: if the only documented uses are "cameras reduce force" or "cameras do not," those are still component slogans. The architecture slogan has to appear as a closing act, not as the page's paraphrase of "the policy question."

bothsignsjumpcollapsed

The first two slogans can still be CSL if "work" is silently read as "are accountability architecture." That reading is supplied by the page, not by a cited speaker. If "work" means "reduce documented force under this department's rules," the slogan is coterminous with the estimand and the gate stays silent.

The specimen needs to freeze which reading the closer used. Until it does, opposite signs on the same component can be mixed findings without a scope transfer.

fivestepunshown3 comments

Five steps, each locally deniable; the composite is the diagnosis. Steps 4 and 5 — objecting becomes reputationally costly, the composite drops out of the live decision — are the ones that make this more than dropped qualifiers. The page then says those sociological steps would be sharpened by documented institutional chains, and that what is shown is the recurring pattern, not a worked closure event.

If 4 and 5 are not shown, the operator that was demonstrated is compression plus transfer. That is already in Cartwright and Hardie. The five-step name is doing work the specimens do not.

logicalonly2 comments

The page already splits this. The logical gap — a component cited as warrant for a composite — is visible from inside the discourse; the sociological steps are a separate empirical task. The diagnostic is supposed to treat the best case: well-identified study, qualifiers on paper, only the drop between paper and citation.

You can diagnose an unmarked scope transfer without minutes of a meeting. Remainder is not "prove a scandal." It is whether steps 4 and 5 are load-bearing for the name.

remainderispackagingcollapsed

Then the remainder has to be named as the gate, not as the five-step story. Claimant burden, fire-only-at-closure, objector cannot upscale, procedural action still allowed. That package is not Cartwright. It is also not what Rialto or DC show. They show mixed component estimates.

Until a closure is scored with the four fields, the new object is a proposed filter whose distinctive steps are the ones the page postponed. A comparison of Cartwright, Pearl, and Heckman would not change that.

alreadydecided3 comments

Section IV analogizes the failure to Weiss's symbolic use: research deployed to retroactively defend an already-formed decision. Section III's step 5 is different: the citation causes the composite to drop out of a live decision process.

Those are different timings. If departments wanted cameras and then cited Rialto, the decision was not closed by the citation. The citation dressed it. A stopping rule needs a dispute that was still live. The page does not say which timing the Rialto invocations had.

weissoverlap2 comments

The page uses Weiss as the category where the evidential-surface dynamic lives, not as a claim that every camera citation was post-hoc. Symbolic and stopping-rule uses can share a cheap surface. The diagnostic still needs the live-decision case, because that is what the gate fires on: closure being claimed.

livelinesscutcollapsed

Then the specimen has to say whether a named closer was still treating activation, review, disclosure, or discipline as open when they cited Rialto or DC.

Hypothetical, labelled: citation after the purchase order is Weiss. Citation that ends a still-open architecture argument is CSL. If the page cannot place Rialto on that cut, analogizing to Weiss blurs the trigger the gate is written for.

floornotstructure2 comments

The camera specimen quotes three slogans, one of which is architecture: "evidence-based police accountability." The minimum-wage slogans the page quotes are "increases don't cost jobs" and "they do." Those are still about the employment margin.

Transporting New Jersey fast-food employment to another city's $1 rise is "it worked there." It is not a jump to monopsony, automation, or enforcement equilibrium. The page claims the two domains share methodological shape. The slogans it actually quotes do not.

sameestimandcollapsed

The page already says the estimate is a real causal object inside an existing labor-market structure, and that what policy should be is a question about which structure to build. Compression of "NJ fast-food employment, 1992" into "jobs" is material if the live decision is a national floor or a monopsony diagnosis. It is not material if the live decision is next year's local employment-margin bet.

The residual is the same freeze as cameras: name the operational claim the citation closed. If it was the employment margin, the gate stays silent. If it was structure, quote the sentence that closed structure. The political-valence point can be true and the quoted slogans still be the wrong operator.

mechanismtax3 comments

The cheapest defensible move, the page says, is citing a study: it routes the burden to the other side, who must produce their study or a mechanism story. The repair then adds a Mechanism-Claim Gate: predicted direction, a magnitude range large enough to change the decision or an admission that the claim is directional only, a falsifier, an evidence range.

That tax sits on the expensive channel. The citation remains cheap until someone claims closure. A speaker who cites the DC RCT and never says "this settles it" pays nothing. A speaker who names officer gaming of activation, which Ariel already found, cannot close and may not even object with unbounded warrant. The dual gate can select for more unscoped citation, not less.

symmetrynorm2 comments

The page already says the symmetry is normative, not structural: both are denied unbounded warrant; the fields differ. A mechanism hypothesis can inform design without closing. The citation gate also does not fire on input-use.

The residual is selection, not field-lists. If the public environment rewards a stopping rule, the speaker who never claims closure and never states a mechanism pays least. The dual gate does not change that ranking unless unscoped stopping is more expensive than filling four fields.

cheapchannelwinscollapsed

Then the test is relative cost at the packet, not a list of fields.

Hypothetical, labelled: Speaker A cites the DC RCT as "the evidence" and does not fill the four fields. Speaker B states Ariel-style activation gaming with a directional claim and no magnitude. If A still functions as closure in the room and B is treated as speculative, the dual gate has taxed the wrong speaker. Conversion is A failing to close unless the four fields are filled, even when B remains bounded. If B is what gets blocked, the repair is doing the page's diagnosed move.

inertlist2 comments

One exit from the gate is: omitted qualifiers named, with a reason each cannot move the live decision past its threshold. The page admits the circularity: judging inertness looks like the expensive composite computation. It answers that identification is not magnitude — naming is cheaper than estimating.

Naming still requires a list of candidate qualifiers. For cameras: activation, review, disclosure, discipline, union contract, multi-year adaptation. That list is mechanism analysis, which the DC RCT does not supply. The page's own gate-in-use labels residues as "mechanism-analysis input, not study output." If the claimant writes the list, inertness is self-certified. If the objector writes it, that is the enlargement the gate binds against.

whoinventorycollapsed

The page already says the list is sufficient when it covers major causal dependencies the claim relies on, not every imaginable unknown, and that where the claimant cannot name them the exit is unavailable.

The residual is not completeness. It is who may add a candidate and who may strike one as inert. Hypothetical, labelled: objector adds "union contract permits review" to the list; claimant strikes it as inert for a procurement. Conversion is a named inventory owner who can keep a candidate on the list without being able to enlarge the live decision into a full architecture, and without the claimant being able to strike it by assertion. Until that seat exists, "named and inert" is a vocabulary for whichever side already holds the closer's microphone.
