Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. They are not causal substitutes. — Mechanism Realism · Only Selection
  2. The reference telos is sustained flourishing. The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. A mechanism's own stated goal can still serve as a local proof obligation — showing that its incentives defeat even the purpose it claims is a bounded finding — but meeting that goal establishes nothing about the margin. — Flourishing Is Maximum Safety Margin
  3. Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation. They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. Evaluation carries current function, replacement cost, path dependence, uncertainty, capture risk, reversibility, and who bears model error into the ledger. — The Stack · Mechanism Space
  4. Optimization is a system function. A civilization has to build, exercise, and revise metamechanisms that search mechanism-space, discard dominated options, install, observe effects, and repair under uncertainty. Not running that loop leaves margin unrealized, and that is itself the failure. No single component — analyst, model, or institution — is presumed to contain a global optimum; the capacity is a property of the system. — Telic Systems · The Three-Layer Architecture
  5. Uncertainty is preserved, not spent. Partial orders, binding constraints, unknowns, and residuals stay explicit. An unmeasured effect is not a favorable default. — The Compression Paradox · Cargo Cult Epistemology

Each essay bears its own evidence. Links carry definitions, derivations, applications, and disputes; they do not transfer proof. Criticism is answered on its substance.

The title identity (flourishing is maximum safety margin) and the §II leftover (a partially ordered viable region plus political choice among margin-preserving configurations) are two objects. An identity cannot also be a real leftover choice.

RM-012402

"Maximum feasible" names the edge of the viable region, not a unique peak. Bare viability is interior: slack can still be added in a dimension without cutting another, so it is dominated without a unique winner. Political choice is which point on the edge, not whether to be on it.

Pareto improvement (more buffer in every dimension, no less in any) gets the argument out of the interior without the ranking §II postponed. It does not pick a maximum. The title is a maximum. §VIII's leftover is exactly the trades along the frontier. The identity names a point the edge does not pick.

Nested hosts split the identity. A civilizational maximum can starve a city's or firm's dimension. Aggregate margin does not replace a constituent's, whose margin counts is not settled by physics, and a civilizational objective must preserve those minima anyway. Aggregate identity and nested-minima identity are different objects.

scope_challenge · host_of_the_identity

RM-012405

Holding one nested host fixed (a city), either the civilization can sit on the page's edge while that city is below a non- buyable-back minimum — identity is aggregate-only — or it cannot, and the title's maximum already spent the political leftover §II was written to keep. The page has both sentences.

Freedom is tagged an engineering claim (price of distributed complexity); redundancy is the buffer against unparameterized shocks. Those purchase different things. Hypothetical: a high- reserve system with a tight command spine has slack and not liberty. If the survival quantity is slack, liberty is a separate political choice physics does not buy.

alternative_mechanism · slack_versus_liberty

RM-012407

The engineering claim is information cost, not a preference for liberty. A center cannot see or price edge problems. Shared culture plus agents who can act without a request is how search happens without sending every surprise up the chain. A stockpile does not search.

source_compatible_defense · freedom_as_search_machinery

RM-012408

The discriminating surprise is one a stockpile cannot cover and a search can. Unknown-dimension shocks are the candidate. Until that category is named, "engineering claim" remains a bet about who is allowed to search.

evidence_burden · shock_class_for_freedom

RM-012409

Searchers need not be free citizens. Labs, firms, and general staffs already explore possibility space inside mixed and unfree systems. Convertible capacity (energy, skill, cohesion turned into a new defense) is the engineering object; "freedom" is a loaded name for it. Tagging art as hypothesis and freedom as engineering does political work the buffer argument does not need.

§I and the subtitle classify the reason as physics, not ethics. §§VII–VIII then call the target non-arbitrary given the corpus's explicit commitment to sustained aliveness. A given commitment is the ethical move; physics then prices it. The subtitle names the downstream half and sells it as the reason.

Filter and bet can sit as layers. Physics tells which trajectories die. Preferring that this host not die is the commitment. Once both are in, aiming for "enough" spends the buffer and the engineering follows. The pair can be real. It should not be called "not ethics."

RM-012412

Drop the commitment and keep the physics. What remains is a viability filter: do not go below zero in a dimension you cannot buy back. That is not flourishing and not a maximum. It is the boundary §II already drew. Flourishing-as-maximum is the bet, sitting in the physics box.
