Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. The weak claim is: given a persistence commitment, physics identifies configurations that undermine it.

Then the hop to civilizations names three jobs: keep pumping entropy, defend capital stocks, keep generating complexity.

Those are not persistence. A polity can continue to exist while complexity generation dies. The thesis says choose persistence. Section V is already choosing a thicker system: the complexity-generating one.

If the commitment is the thin one, physics rules out almost nothing on civilizational timescales. If it is the thick one, "choose persistence" is the wrong name for the wager.

Those can be two commitments. Persistence of the bounded system, and persistence of its complexity-generation. Section VII names the second as an adopted objective, the axiological wager.

Then the thesis is the thin commitment and the later sections are the thick one. The Hume move only needs the thin one: if you want the system to continue, some configs undermine that. The wager is extra. It does not have to ride in the same sentence as the guillotine.

Which configuration on this page does physics rule out as failing to exist, not as failing to generate complexity?

If the answer is a blank, the engineering work is not in the Hume move. It is in the wager, which is a terminal value the page says it is not deriving. What would fill the row: one named config, the thin commitment, and an existence-failure.

The page treats "this bridge will collapse" and "this civilizational configuration will self-destruct" as the same kind of sentence: both predictions, neither an ought.

A bridge collapse has a load, a span, a time. Self-destruction of a civilizational configuration is offered as derivable from physics the same way. Thermodynamics constrains cells. It does not, by itself, name the time at which a polity has self-destructed.

Until those are the same kind of prediction, staying on the "is" side is a classification, not a derivation.

Grant both are meant as predictions. They still do not have the same slack.

"This bridge will collapse" is allowed hours, maybe years under a known load. "This configuration will self-destruct" can look true this century and still be there. The bridge sentence is not allowed that.

Section VII later mentions a specified horizon for complexity-generation capacity. The collapse sentence in §IV does not inherit it. Two different clocks.

Name one civilizational configuration this page would count as ruled out, the horizon, and the observable that would already have shown the ruling-out if it had happened.

If that row cannot be filled from this page, the weak claim is a schema for later work, not an engineering result. Hume's demand is met either way. The "what changes" in §VII is not.

Instrumental convergence is about an agent modeled as pursuing a goal. Persistence shows up as a subgoal because that agent needs to keep going in order to do anything else.

A civilization is not that agent. Offices, populations, and languages are trying to keep different things going. The hop "apply the same argument to civilizations" needs a specified object: persist-as-what.

If the object is picked by the person running the analysis, the constraints constrain that person's preferred configs. That is not what physics does to an agent that already has a goal.

You can treat the civilization as the system the way the agent is treated: a bounded region that keeps pumping entropy or does not.

That still does not pick which internal configuration counts as the system. A regime that wants to persist as itself can trade away the complexity-generation the page lists as an instrumental requirement.

The leftover is which of those the constraints bind. They can oppose each other. The hop does not say which one wins.

§VII says some ethical questions, and some governance questions, become engineering questions. The subjective zone remains. Physics-compatible options can stay incomparable.

That is a partition. "Some" needs a member.

Without one question that moves from the ethics pile to the engineering pile, and one that stays, the split is a promise. The Hume move can be real and the partition still empty.

Then pick one disagreement that looks like a value clash.

Name the persistence metric that would settle it as engineering. Name what would remain a value clash if both sides' configs still persist.

If the first cannot be named, §VII's "some" has no member. If only the second can, the live questions are still in the incomparable leftover §VII keeps.

The telephone-game section is a history of a stopping rule: Hume asked for an explanation, Moore called a fallacy, positivists split the domains, common sense installed the cliché.

The load-bearing distinction is in §IV: physics does not tell you what to want; given persistence, it identifies configs that undermine that.

If you cut §III, that distinction is intact. "A demand became a ban" explains why people bounce. It is not why the weak claim works. Recode the genealogy as reception history. The derivation does not need it.

Then a reader who pattern-matches this to Harris needs a test that Harris fails and this page passes.

One cut: a configuration that persists and looks bad on the neuroscience-of-well-being ranking Harris wanted. Harris ranks it bad. The weak claim does not — it is physics-compatible. Another: a configuration that scores well on that ranking and undermines persistence. Harris can still like it. This page ranks it out if persistence is adopted.

If those come out the same, they are not categorically different moves.

Section VI says Bentham produced a proxy-inheritance failure. That phrase is a pointer. On this page, what observable would have shown Bentham as a persistence-undermining configuration rather than as the strong claim?

If none, a reader of this essay still cannot tell the weak claim from a more careful Harris. The immunization story can be true and the categorical difference still not shown here.
