Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. The five questions run after you pick the system. Virus plus host while it is replicating. Thermostat plus room. Ecosystem at a slow timescale, treated as a composite.

Those units are what pass. The wall thermostat alone fails. A hurricane, taken as a storm, fails. Membership is not coming from the questions. It is coming from which loop you allowed.

You have to name a unit before any test. That is not a loophole. The wall box fails detection and correction without the HVAC and the room. A convenient small boundary is supposed to get a no. That is what the five questions are for.

The virus counts only as virus-plus-host-during-replication, because that is when hijacked host machinery counts as correction. The thermostat counts only as thermostat-plus-room.

I want a unit that is not allowed, not just a unit that fails a question. Right now every interesting no looks like "you picked the wrong loop."

Two people are running the same test if they pick the same loop-plus-substrate pair before they answer the five questions, and they get the same yes or no.

They are not, if they pick different pairs and both have a coherent five-answer sheet. Then "telic" names the pair they already chose.

The language rows split "language as convention" (no) from academy or editorial regime (yes). The no is that the language itself does not correct to a setpoint.

Nobody was going to test "English" as the loop. Hypothetical: a speech community that shames, schools, and prestige-ranks, with no academy. That unit has a norm, notices deviation, and pushes back. It is closer to the academy row than to "the language itself." The table's no is a unit that was never on the table.

Civilization is the other unit problem. It counts at a coarse timescale, with a composite-regulatory framing, and loses traction when boundaries, specifications, or corrective machinery are contested.

Those contested stretches are when you'd want the rest of the page's tools — capture, repair, collapse. The category goes idle exactly then.

You can still score the parts: this agency is telic, that crowd isn't. A civilization-level no would then mean "don't run the test on the composite," not "put the tools down."

That does not save the opener. The shared class is cells, institutions, civilizations, and AI. Later, civilization is a maybe.

Open a window, the thermostat works back toward the setpoint. Knock a hurricane off its track and the vortex re-forms while the gradient lasts. Both return.

The page says one is comparing to a spec and the other is only relaxing. I don't know what I'd measure in the storm that isn't already the classification.

A hurricane is not comparing itself to a genome. The spec has to be a template sitting in the system, not just a restoring force. Pressure and temperature gradients are not that.

Then the thermostat's setpoint is a voltage someone else set. If "carried" means the system made the template, the thermostat fails the clean example. If it means "present as a parameter," a river's bed geometry carries a channel.

I don't know which of those "carried" is.

The fifth property is supposed to be the same question. Bacterium: dies on shock. Central bank: loses legitimacy on a sustained miss. Thermostat plus room: the room goes to ambient and the wall box is still on the wall.

Those are different failures. If legitimacy-loss counts, a lot of institutions pass on reputation. If only physical destruction counts, the central-bank row should be a no.

Later the page says the telos is what correction actually protects, not the slogan. A university that says truth and corrects toward prestige. A central bank that says inflation and corrects toward legitimacy.

Then the specification is not something you read off in advance. You infer it from what the system actually protects. A hurricane also "reveals" a vortex if that's the rule.

Those are different jobs. Membership uses whatever spec the machinery is carrying. Slogan-versus-revealed is a later check for systems already in the class. A university can be telic under its actual machinery and still be lying on the website.

Then membership still needs a spec before you perturb anything. For the university, which spec do you write down before you threaten the budget — truth, prestige, or "whatever correction will reveal"?

If it's the third, membership is using the later check.

That only works if the real telos is the revealed one. If membership used the stated spec, capture would be the system missing its spec, not installing a new one. Those are different diagnoses. "Same architecture" needs one of them.

An institution is telic in exactly the same formal sense a bacterium is, not by analogy. The five properties are abstract. A cell's correction is chemistry. A court's is a procedure plus people who can ignore the procedure. Matching five headings is a shared outline.

In a cell that's metabolism. Hypothetical: a ministry whose reports keep closing while the original caseload gets worse. If that is the same failure, the five properties already diagnosed it. If you still need extra facts — whether the report binds, whether anyone can stop the reporting — the properties didn't carry the failure.

The leftover is the frozen deployed policy with no reward signal and no comparison to the training spec. Detection is gone unless you put the scaffold back. So "the trained policy in a deployment environment is one telic system" may fail the detection question on the page's own split.
