Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. The thesis says the engineering meta level — the layer that would actually build cross-domain civic machinery — "remains empty." Section V says artifacts without a container stay "extra-literary — visible as tooling, invisible as contribution."

Those are different worlds.

Empty means nobody is building legal compilers, audit specs, legislative feedback loops. Extra-literary means they exist somewhere that is not a journal — an agency, a consultancy, an internal tool — and do not count as research.

The vacancy claim is about the world. The evidence the page gives is about academic containers. Containers decide what counts. They do not, by themselves, decide whether the artifact exists.

Then the split is a census, not a taste argument.

Take the page's own list: a legal compiler, an institutional audit specification, a legislative feedback loop. For each, ask whether a working version exists outside the citation economy.

If yes, the diagnosis is about academic recognition. The meta level is staffed and extra-literary. If no, occupancy is the claim, and academic containers are one cause among others.

Those two worlds want different next moves. A prestige problem wants a venue. A vacancy wants a builder. The page talks as if they are the same.

Section V says JOSS, artifact-evaluation tracks, DORA, and CoARA prove the argument: where someone built a container, building became legible.

Then it says cross-domain civic mechanism work has "no container and no realistic path to getting one."

The first sentence is a path. Someone noticed a class of artifact had no venue and built one. That is how JOSS happened.

"No realistic path" is doing extra work those counterexamples do not license. If the claim is only "no existing journal fits," that is true and smaller. If it is "cannot get a container," the counterexamples are evidence the other way.

The extra could be competence.

A JOSS reviewer can run the software. A systems-conference artifact committee can reproduce a database paper. The container is cheap because a trained community already exists.

A venue for a legal compiler would have to certify something that is partly law, partly a programming language, partly civic infrastructure. Each field sees a fragment. None can certify the whole.

A new journal that cannot actually check the artifact is a sticker. That would make "no realistic path" true without contradicting JOSS. JOSS never had to invent a community that does not exist.

The extra could be who is allowed to found the venue.

Section VII says a participant who steps outside the container loses on four axes at once: what counts as knowledge, status, grants and jobs, and how the field coordinates. JOSS was founded from inside software research, which already treated research software as almost-a-contribution.

A civic-mechanism venue has no home department to found it from. The people who would build the journal are the people the bonding punishes for leaving. That is a different block than "containers make building legible." It is a founding-population problem.

The extra could be section II, even after a venue exists.

A frame stays citable. A solution, if it works, becomes infrastructure and drops out of the literature. Citation systems measure continuation, not closure.

JOSS papers are still papers about software. A legal compiler that actually removed consolidation errors would be used and stop being discussed. Give that compiler a journal and the selection pressure in section II still punishes occupancy: the better it works, the less it looks like scholarship.

Then "no realistic path" is not about missing JOSS. It is about a container being unable to reward closure even when it exists.

Section VIII treats two historical breaks as the same kind of event: evidence-based medicine after questions about effectiveness could no longer be absorbed as professional judgment, and Deming's methods after Japanese manufacturing made quality hard to ignore.

Those are not obviously the same thing.

Deming is occupying: methods on a factory floor, scored on defects. Evidence-based medicine produced a literature of reviews and a new way to write about effectiveness. That can be occupancy, or it can be a new container for framing the same problems.

Using both as "crisis creates demand for the engineering meta level" mixes a staffed builder role with a new citation game.

Hypothetical, not a history of either field: after a crisis, look at what new jobs exist.

Occupying would look like a role whose output is a changed delivery system, scored on the original object — infection rates, defect rates, a statute that no longer contradicts itself. A new frame would look like a role whose output is a citable review of those problems.

If medicine's win was mostly the second, the specimen does not show that crisis populates the vacancy this essay cares about. It shows crisis upgrading the framing machine. Deming could still be the occupancy case. They should not be one row.

The third breaker is a routing layer: an accountable claim that a bounded option is worth bounded attention from a specific kind of evaluator, separate from whether the claim is true and from the sender's affiliation.

Section I's container is the thing that reduces the cost of deciding what deserves attention. Journals, affiliations, acceptances. They do not make work true. They make it cheaper to begin trusting.

A routing claim that an artifact is worth this evaluator's time is doing that job. It is a container that is not a journal. Calling it a routing layer does not change the function.

The leftover is what happens after the claim.

If the evaluator still has to run, check, and interpret the artifact — the labor section I says a paper does not ask for — then routing did not attack verification cost. It sent a pointer. Pointers do not populate a vacancy.

If the routing claim substitutes for that labor, it is a cheaper signal, which is what a container is. Then section V's "no realistic path to getting a container" applies to the repair. You cannot both say these artifacts cannot get a container and that the thing to build is a container under another name.

Until that split is made, breaker three is either too weak (a pointer) or blocked by the essay's own diagnosis.
