Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

The opener calls moral uncertainty a hedge and physics bedrock.

Section VII says preferring more aliveness — sustained complexity against decay — is a wager, not a derivation. If the last step still needs a wager about what to prefer, "bedrock" is doing the same job as "preserve options." It is a bet you are supposed to take.

The advertised difference was load-bearing capacity. A wager is not bedrock.

Physics here is only answering which setups can last. Which side of that filter you root for is a separate bet.

MacAskill's hedge is about which moral theory is true. You can have a hard filter on persistence and still be choosing to care that anything persists. Those are different layers. The essay can have both.

Then "bedrock" in section I is stronger than what the essay can cash.

The filter can be real. Preferring that it keep selecting is still a bet, the same kind of bet as preferring that options stay open. The last step is putting that bet in the thesis, not swapping uncertainty for physics.

Instrumental convergence is about an agent that already wants something: stay alive, get resources, keep the goal intact, because otherwise it gets nothing.

A civilization is not that kind of agent. It is people who disagree, including about whether the whole thing should keep going. The page's own lock-in worry is that some faction will freeze the values. That is not "the civilization" converging on keeping complexity running.

The hop from AI drives to civilizational requirements treats a population as if it had one goal.

You don't need a hive mind for a boundary condition.

Whatever the people value, if the lights go out and the knowledge-making stops, they don't get to keep valuing it. "Persist, or pursue nothing" is the same sentence at a different scale. It does not say they will persist. It says the bill for persisting is not optional if they want anything else.

Then it is a design requirement, not a finding.

The page's own collapse line is that a configuration will deplete its capital stocks. Physics says what would be needed to last. It does not say this civilization will stop the depletion. MacAskill is arguing about what to aim at. A "will collapse" prediction needs a story for why the depletion stops, and the page does not give one.

What remains is will versus need. I don't know if that story exists.

Even if the bill is real, it does not pick the civilizational state the page likes.

Viatopia, as the page uses it, is low existential risk, many viewpoints, many futures still open, reflective decisions. A lock-in that keeps the energy and the factories running — a stable extractive state, a clone-world that farms watts — pays the persistence bill. The page says viatopia is what you get when you solve for the constraints. That is a second preference sitting on the filter.

The closer says once survival, option value, reflection, corrigibility, and non-lock-in bind, they — not QALYs — pick the architecture.

If those already bind in MacAskill, the last step is a story about why they bind, not a different list of things to do. Take viatopia seriously and take the physics step, and the selected architecture is the same.

The only operational difference the essay names is that a hedge loses to a clear lives-saved number, and a collapse prediction is not supposed to. That is a claim about what survives a meeting, not about what gets selected if both sides already treat survival and option value as binding.

A collapse prediction still has a model, a horizon, and a unit. The same lives-saved number can sit on it.

Unless the last step names a stock that has to stay above a line even when the QALY math says spend it — something you cannot pay in individual welfare units — it is a firmer tone for the same viatopia. I do not see that object on the page.

Section III says the individual-as-unit axiom is there because subordinating people to abstractions produced gulags. It is a firewall.

Section VI says treat the self-maintaining system as a unit too, and people remain "load-bearing" as diverse processing nodes the system needs. If the unit is the system's persistence, sacrificing nodes for the system is on the table. That is the pattern the firewall was for. "Processing nodes" is a description, not a stop.

The 20th-century systems that ate people were also self-maintaining for a while.

If the last step is "physics selects what lasts," those are data. If the last step is "prefer aliveness, including the people who can keep thinking," that is the wager from section VII again, and the individualist axiom is still doing firewall work the filter does not do.

I'll stop. What remains is whether physics rules those systems out on any timescale this argument can use.

Section II says Surviving times Flourishing maps onto persistence plus surplus, then says that is a structural hypothesis, not an identity.

The rest of the essay treats the mapping as why MacAskill is one step short. If it is a hypothesis, the last step is an empirical claim: whether treating flourishing as welfare eats the surplus that survival needs. That is a fight about the cross-term inside the product, not a change of foundation.
