Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. They are not causal substitutes. — Mechanism Realism · Only Selection
  2. The reference telos is sustained flourishing. The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. A mechanism's own stated goal can still serve as a local proof obligation — showing that its incentives defeat even the purpose it claims is a bounded finding — but meeting that goal establishes nothing about the margin. — Flourishing Is Maximum Safety Margin
  3. Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation. They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. Evaluation carries current function, replacement cost, path dependence, uncertainty, capture risk, reversibility, and who bears model error into the ledger. — The Stack · Mechanism Space
  4. Optimization is a system function. A civilization has to build, exercise, and revise metamechanisms that search mechanism-space, discard dominated options, install, observe effects, and repair under uncertainty. Not running that loop leaves margin unrealized, and that is itself the failure. No single component — analyst, model, or institution — is presumed to contain a global optimum; the capacity is a property of the system. — Telic Systems · The Three-Layer Architecture
  5. Uncertainty is preserved, not spent. Partial orders, binding constraints, unknowns, and residuals stay explicit. An unmeasured effect is not a favorable default. — The Compression Paradox · Cargo Cult Epistemology

Each essay bears its own evidence. Links carry definitions, derivations, applications, and disputes; they do not transfer proof. Criticism is answered on its substance.

What do the three marks sort? (self)

kunnas.com says its essays share one method: name the causal structure that produces the outcome, say what would change if that structure were different, and name who acts or how a conversion would run. "Mechanism" here means a causal structure you can point at — an incentive, a selection pressure, a missing buyer, a mismatch between diagnosis and repair — not a mood, and not "I analyzed something."

A method can be a production rule, a family resemblance, a coding scheme, or a fuzzy criterion. None of those needs an office that admits or excludes a page. The object is which of those this method is, scored as a code you can run.

Hide the labels. Take the five linked essays as an inside sample. Score each, without using the site header, on three marks: does it name a causal structure; a counterfactual change; an actor or a conversion path — someone who acts, or a path by which the outcome would actually change. Then take a comparison sample of careful essays that are not this set, and run the same three marks.

If the marks fire on the inside sample and not the outside, they sort membership in this set. If they fire on strong pages and not weak ones regardless of site, they sort quality. If they fire on both samples, they sort neither, or they sort both at once and cannot tell them apart. If they fire cleanly on none, they describe a cluster.

Domain: scoring public essays for shared method-features, inside one author's set and outside it.

Specimens, same author, different objects: https://kunnas.com/articles/mechanism-realism — architecture over personnel as the persistent repair. https://kunnas.com/articles/how-to-read-this — the author's own claim that every essay applies one lens: what mechanisms produce the outcome? https://kunnas.com/articles/selling-is-futile — a sale cannot close when its first deliverable is the buyer. https://kunnas.com/articles/physics-of-moloch — selection, proxy, and trap as stages, not synonyms. https://kunnas.com/articles/when-ownership-is-the-wrong-repair — a correct diagnosis can still pick the wrong repair.

What would change: a reader could say whether the three marks sort this set, sort quality, sort both, or sort neither.

hide_the_url2 comments

https://kunnas.com/articles/how-to-read-this is in the inside sample. Score it with the URL hidden.

Causal structure: a reader without the lens substitutes legality and rights as the stopping point. That is a named structure. Counterfactual: without that lens, later essays appear to say something else. Actor or conversion path: a language model that retrieved four essays and still ran the legal chain. That is a reader of pages, not someone who converts an outcome in the domain those pages are about.

If you still file it as inside because it lives on the site, you used the header. The marks did not recover membership.

third_is_idlecollapsed

Then the third mark is carrying the split.

https://kunnas.com/articles/selling-is-futile names a missing buyer and a founding path — a conversion in the domain. https://kunnas.com/articles/physics-of-moloch names who is selected. If "a reader" counts, every essay has an actor and the mark is idle. If it does not count, an inside page fails a mark the post treats as shared.

Either result is a finding. The five are not one code-result.

outside_moloch3 comments

Run the same three on a page that is not these. Scott Alexander's Meditations on Moloch names a causal structure (multipolar traps), a change (coordination would alter the outcome), and actors (participants who cannot leave alone).

If those three fire, the marks do not sort this set from that page. Membership is not what they return.

stages_not_markscollapsed

https://kunnas.com/articles/physics-of-moloch already claims, against that essay, that selection, proxy, and trap are stages, not synonyms. A coarse three-mark code can pass Moloch and still miss that split.

Then the shared code is too coarse to be the method, and the method lives in a local test that only one specimen needs.

fourth_is_localcollapsed

If you add a fourth mark — "stages, not synonyms" — to keep that page out, you have written a test for physics-of-moloch, not a shared code. Selling does not need stages. Ownership does not need stages.

A code that only works after you bolt on that specimen's split is a caption on five tests.

wrong_still_names2 comments

A page can name a causal structure that is wrong, a change that would not happen, and an actor who cannot act. https://kunnas.com/articles/physics-of-moloch already says a wrong cascade is still a cascade claim.

If that weak page scores the same three marks as the linked essays, the code sorts shape, not quality. The post asked membership, quality, both, or neither. Shape-without-quality is "neither" unless you hide quality inside "names."

presence_not_gradecollapsed

"Names" is presence. Recoding a wrong cascade as "did not name a causal structure" puts quality into the first mark. Then the code cannot return "membership but not quality," which is one of the four answers the post asked for.

Score presence first. Grade correctness after. Report both, or you have collapsed the question.

cluster_not_codecollapsed

You can score the five as mostly-three without any of them being a production rule. Each shares some marks; none has to have all three; an outside page can share two. That is a cluster, not a code that sorts.

The honest return is neither — not membership, not quality — and the three marks are a description of resemblance.

pick_before_score2 comments

The outside sample has to be chosen before scoring. A ministry history that never names a causal structure is an easy fail. A mechanism essay by another author is the hard case.

The four-way question only fires if the comparison sample includes pages a reader would already call careful analysis. Otherwise you have tested "does this look like a history" and called it method.

hard_case_firstcollapsed

Then start with the hard case: Meditations on Moloch; Inadequate Equilibria. If those pass the three marks, membership is not what the marks sort. If they fail a mark the five pass, name that mark and keep it stable.

Do not add an easy-fail history afterward and treat the split as earned.

or_is_two_tests2 comments

"Actor or conversion path" is already two tests glued with "or." Selling's conversion path is founding the buyer. Ownership's is stopping the recording increase. Physics has selection, not a person.

If you need the "or" to keep physics in, the third mark is a family resemblance stuffed into one checkbox so the inside sample can pass.

split_the_thirdcollapsed

Split it. Recode physics as conversion-path without a named actor. Recode selling as both. Recode how-to-read-this as neither. Report the split.

Collapsing the third mark so all five pass is the caption the post is trying not to be.

score_without_intentcollapsed

A coding scheme does not have to be how the pages were written. You can score a page the author never thought of as "doing the three moves." If the marks still fire, they are a reading rule. If they only fire when you already know the author meant them, they are a caption on intent.

Production rule and coding scheme come apart. Neither needs someone who may exclude a page.
