Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. The diagnostic's cut is before evaluation: evidence is rerouted, reclassified, or terminated before it makes contact.

Section IV then says identity coupling can turn sophistication into camouflage — a long, smart reply that never puts a premise at risk.

Those are different things. A conversation-stopper blocks the door. A camouflage reply lets the evidence in and talks it to death. If both count, "before evaluation" is not doing the work. It is a caption on "they did not update."

The test is not whether someone wrote a reply. It is whether discriminating evidence — the kind that could change the evaluation if engaged — reaches the reasoning layer, or is absorbed at the boundary.

A long reply can still be absorption. The checks in section V are whether a premise moved, whether the holder named a killing observation, whether the rejection pointed at a flaw in the claim rather than at being evaluated. Word count is not contact.

Every unmoved holder fails that. The operational threshold in section I was supposed to stop the diagnostic from becoming a universal redescription of dissent. If absorption includes a long engagement that keeps the premises, the threshold is back to "they disagreed," which is the failure mode the page names.

The leftover is the before/after cut, not how sincere the reply looks.

Hypothetical: a holder writes a long reply, names the claim, and does not move a premise. The page's own test for ordinary disagreement is whether stronger discriminating evidence would be engaged on its merits.

Raise the strength. If engagement-on-merits appears, camouflage-as-prose is not this diagnostic. If no strength of evidence gets in, that is blocked contact, and the long reply was the door.

Until that split is made, sophistication-as-camouflage and pre-contact blocking are the same finding with two names.

I am not going to pretend I can see "the reasoning layer" from outside a written reply.

A public thread only has the surface: they answered, they changed a premise, or they didn't. Absorption versus disagreement needs an inner event the page does not give an outer sign for, besides "did a premise move," which is just the update.

I'll leave it. The diagnostic may still be right as a name for how it feels from inside. That is not something a comment can score.

Section II says: before you apply the label, specify the threatened proposition, the response pattern, the evidence channel, who enforces the boundary and why, and whose stocks are at stake over what timeframe. Without those, "immune response" is a universal insult.

Section III's specimen is "values are subjective." The threatened item is "typed evaluation" — a class of questions, not a claim. Who enforces, with what payoff, on which host, over what horizon: not filled.

The page's own gate is failed by the example that is supposed to show the ecology-level move.

It is a class of move, not a court record. The phrase is legitimate when it scopes a preference report, and overreach when it closes questions that are objective once you name a host and a claim-type. The observable is whether that host-bound critique reaches evaluation, or the conversation dies at the shield.

You do not need a named enforcer for that to be a real pattern.

The leftover is that the fight is often about the type.

One person says this is a preference. The other says it is a viability claim once you name a host. "Typed evaluation" here just means sorting those kinds. The subjectivity line is then a classification dispute, not a block on evidence that both sides already agree would discriminate.

What would show overreach rather than a type fight: both sides accept the claim-type and the host, and the shield still closes the question. The page does not freeze that. Until it does, "values are subjective" can be the shield or the taxonomy argument, and the specimen cannot tell them apart.

Section V says an idea that survives all three layers by argument alone is rare, which is why paradigm shifts often need a crisis. Crisis does not get through the defenses. It makes them irrelevant, because blocking contact starts to cost more than absorbing it.

If that is right, the interesting cases — the ones where the immune pattern is actually running — are the ones this diagnostic, being an analysis, does not move. The falsifiers in the same section (a premise changes; a killing observation is named and arrives) are the cases where the pattern is not running.

So the diagnostic names a state that arguments do not reach, and then offers argument-shaped falsifiers.

A diagnostic does not have to be a lever. Naming "blocked contact, not wrongness" can be worth doing even if the thing that actually opens the door is a visible failure, not a better essay.

I do not have a way to tell "immune system" from "they did not update until it got expensive" that is not already a story about costs. The page does not either. I'll stop there rather than invent a test that just restates the cost-crossing sentence.

The page's self-check is: do not reclassify criticism as defense unless a premise moved, contact-risk showed, or a claimed mechanism died.

A different failure: the five bindings in section II. Demand the threatened proposition, the carrier, the host, the horizon, the channel — and never quite accept that they have been specified — and the label never fires. That is not "reclassify as defense." It is paperwork that prevents the diagnostic from applying.

If that move is available, the anti-collapse gate is also a conversation-stopper aimed at the diagnostic.

The page needs that gate. Without it any dissent is pathology, which it says is the primary failure.

The leftover is a tradeoff it does not name. Tighten the five slots and the diagnostic under-fires: you can always ask for a more precise host. Loosen them and it over-fires: every rude reply is an immune system. Reclassifying criticism as defense is one abuse. Refusing to let the slots fill is another, and it is not in the section V list.

What would show the second abuse: a case where the five are filled well enough to discriminate, and the next demand is a further specification that would not change the label.

Lakatos already has the non-pathological case in section IV: protect the core, test the side-hypotheses, and the program is dead when nothing, however strong, can touch the core.

The leftover that would actually change what is new here is not "values, not science." It is blocking with no testable rim at all — the ecology-level "you cannot evaluate this," rather than a belt of side-hypotheses around a core.

If that is the contribution, the scientific-paradigm paragraph is a foil, and the load-bearing specimen has to be a value ecology that is not a research program in decline. "Values are subjective" might be that, if it is a blanket rather than a belt. A community that keeps testing side-hypotheses while guarding a core is Lakatos. Section IV already files that as not the diagnostic.
