The thesis treats every predecessor failure as one wall (how without what-for). The taxonomy lists different leftovers: wrong purpose, thrown-out purpose, wrong variable, unclosed enforcement, missing redesign. Wiener is a counterexample to the how-without-what-for wall inside the tradition. "Same wall" is a family name, not one mechanism.

After Wiener, purpose-as-feedback is available for any loop with a reference. The remaining problems — which reference a country tracks, and who keeps the loop running when insiders are also players — are not the mechanical philosophers' deficit. The thesis still writes them as the same wall.

Dropping "same wall" recodes the page as a catalog of prior misses the next design must survive, not as a diagnosis of one recurring cut. The grouping word is load-bearing for the story and false to the table.

VSM is written for organism, corporation, or state. Cybersyn was real-time cybernetic governance of a national economy. That is carrying Wiener into a country. A coup can destroy a crossing; it cannot unhappen it. "Nobody crossed" is false of the specimen the page just named.

Beer crossed the application gap with identity left undefined. That is the table's own mark. The thesis still needs a narrower verb than "nobody crossed": application happened; destination stayed unset.

The named crossing died to a military not in the loop. The five design constraints are derived purpose, from physics, right variable, enforcement without external referee, redesign loop. Force that can turn the machine off is not among them. If Cybersyn is the specimen, the leftover constraint is force, not a missing thermodynamic target.

Convergent lineage cannot evidence the assembly the table says they did not make. They agreed mechanisms run politics; they disagreed about purpose, variable, and enforcement. Independent arrival is a path-claim about this author, not extra support for the physics step. A shared starting cut — throwing out Aristotle's what-for with his physics — would also produce a long lineage of trying to smuggle purpose back.

Wiener's purpose is a control loop tracking a target already installed. Glennan's purpose is a design or selection history read off what survived. Thermodynamic selection offered as that history is a caption after the run, not a setpoint you can install before it. The page uses both as one repair of the mechanical philosophers' deficit.

A filter can rule out "ignore decay" without handing over the number to track. Huxley already had garden-against-entropy and could not say what to grow. Reading the death of gardens as their purpose is an autopsy, not a planting list. Selection-as-history does not supply Wiener's setpoint.

Wiener's purpose is usable only if the target is knowable while the system is alive, the way 20°C is knowable to a thermostat. If the only readout is collapse, civilizational "purpose" is a story about wreckage, not a control setting carried into governance. The page names no 1972-knowable civilizational state of that kind.

Odum is graded "correct method, wrong variable." Energy throughput is a metered physical quantity. Organized complexity is the preferred goal and is not a thermodynamic state variable in the same way; the page does not say how a finance ministry would read fire-versus-forest as a number it could be wrong about next year. Recoding the variable may be a better goal. It is a different method than the one Odum is being graded on.

Informational enforcement — violation binary and visible, so legitimacy collapses and support is withdrawn — is not a referee. A number everyone can see still needs someone who treats the bit as ending the game. Otherwise it is another published metric. The leftover is whether visibility closes the Hurwicz loop or renames the missing enforcer.

The Swiss debt brake works, when it works, because courts and voters treat a breach as a breach — outside enforcers relative to the officials who want to spend. Relocating the referee into legitimacy and "the substrate" names the public as the missing outside party. That does not close the recursion the table says mechanism design cannot close. When visibility flips that switch is unnamed.
