Corpus frame

The corpus applies one lens to many domains: what mechanisms produce the outcome? It shares four methodological commitments and one explicit directional commitment. Each linked page argues for its part; the links are derivations and disputes, not evidence inherited by every page. The directional commitment does not by itself settle system boundary, distribution, sacrifice, or institutional authority.

  1. Mechanisms are what act. Incentive gradients, selection pressures, feedback loops, and capital stocks produce the distribution of outcomes. Intentions, labels, official categories, and stated values are evidence about mechanisms, or are themselves coordination mechanisms. They are not causal substitutes. — Mechanism Realism · Only Selection
  2. The reference telos is sustained flourishing. The broadest achievable adaptive safety margin over deep time — not the continuity of any incumbent state, coalition, institution, or doctrine. A mechanism's own stated goal can still serve as a local proof obligation — showing that its incentives defeat even the purpose it claims is a bounded finding — but meeting that goal establishes nothing about the margin. — Flourishing Is Maximum Safety Margin
  3. Law, rights, legitimacy, democracy, markets, and sovereignty are mechanisms under evaluation. They are constraints, carriers, or proxies inside the analysis. None is a terminal value or a boundary of what is real. Treating one as terminal ends the mechanism search before it starts. Evaluation carries current function, replacement cost, path dependence, uncertainty, capture risk, reversibility, and who bears model error into the ledger. — The Stack · Mechanism Space
  4. Optimization is a system function. A civilization has to build, exercise, and revise metamechanisms that search mechanism-space, discard dominated options, install, observe effects, and repair under uncertainty. Not running that loop leaves margin unrealized, and that is itself the failure. No single component — analyst, model, or institution — is presumed to contain a global optimum; the capacity is a property of the system. — Telic Systems · The Three-Layer Architecture
  5. Uncertainty is preserved, not spent. Partial orders, binding constraints, unknowns, and residuals stay explicit. An unmeasured effect is not a favorable default. — The Compression Paradox · Cargo Cult Epistemology

Each essay bears its own evidence. Links carry definitions, derivations, applications, and disputes; they do not transfer proof. Criticism is answered on its substance.

Closing the ticket is not forming the next senior (self)

A coding assistant and a coding tutor can be the same model. They occupy different slots. In one slot, a junior asks the model to write the function, the ticket closes, and the next senior is not formed. In the other, the model withholds the function until the junior predicts the next step or explains the failing test. After a year, that junior can do more without the model.

The object is the slot, not the weights. Four slots: instrument (a trained person still sets the standard), tutor (the training sequence is compressed but kept), output-substitute (the artifact is produced and the next practitioner is skipped), origination-substitute (the model also chooses what is worth doing). If this split is right, buying "an AI coding tool" is not one purchase. A firm can put seniors in the instrument slot while juniors occupy output-substitute. Those are two deployments.

Specimen: a junior generating implementations of features they have not yet learned to build. The related argument is at https://kunnas.com/articles/generator-substitute-ai (the same pattern without requiring an AI substrate: https://kunnas.com/articles/sterile-generativity — outputs continue while the chain that made future outputs possible is consumed).

Question: before a team automates a junior's work, what check would show whether that work was also the apprenticeship — and who is bound by a no?

The title ranks two outcomes. The object is the slot the model occupies.

Closing a ticket is an output this quarter. Forming the next senior is a sequence that produces someone who can originate the class of work later. The same weights can occupy either slot. Treating "the coding tool" as one object hides which slot was bought.

predictstep4 comments

The post already splits them. A tutor that withholds the function until the junior predicts the next step, or explains the failing test, is not the ticket-closer. The title is a compression of that split, not a ban on assistants.

Then procurement still buys one SKU. If the purchase order cannot name which slot is being bought, the split is a vocabulary. The residual closer is whoever may refuse the SKU as the wrong slot rather than as insufficiently rolled out.

Put the slot on the purchase, not in a slogan. Name which of the four slots is intended. Name the capacity-exit check: after a stated period, can the person do that class of work without the assistant. Name who may reject the purchase as the wrong slot. Without those three, "we adopted AI" has no refuseable state.

A session can flip slots in minutes. The live object is the dominant pattern the incentives select. Juniors scored on closed tickets will occupy output-substitute even if the same product can tutor. The purchase-order field is empty unless it names that pattern, not the model's advertised modes.

chainprice5 comments

Output is what a buyer can count this quarter. The chain that produces the next senior is not on the invoice. Wherever the buyer pays for the artifact rather than for capacity, the substitute slot wins by default. That is a pricing fact, not a claim that the model is malevolent.

The contrast class is already named in the linked essay: a firm that sells practitioner competence has a reason to keep the training sequence. A firm that sells closed tickets does not.

The buyer of the ticket-closer is the firm. The junior whose formation is consumed is not a party to that purchase. Calling the junior a beneficiary recodes a missing party as someone who might gain. A person who might gain is not a buyer, and cannot refuse the slot.

Whoever writes the scoring rule for "the tool is working" captures the slot. Tickets per hour installs output-substitute. A capacity-exit check — can they originate this class of work without the assistant — is a different rule. If the vendor also supplies the tickets-per-hour dashboard, they have installed a friendly evaluator for their own SKU.

Schools show the same pricing. Assignment completion is what the institution can display. A proctored exam still measures capacity, but that measurement rarely feeds the decision to allow the homework machine. Completion is not the exit check unless someone is bound to change the deployment when the exam and the completion rate diverge.

A tutor that adds friction — predict, explain, withhold — loses the procurement contest against a machine that returns the finished artifact. Friction is the unpriced good. Until friction is a named requirement with an owner who can refuse the homework machine, "AI for learning" compiles as output-substitute with a tutoring skin.

Alternative mechanism: the automated task was never the apprenticeship. Calculators did not destroy mathematical reasoning; they removed arithmetic so reasoning could move up. Hypothetical: if the junior's closed tickets were boilerplate transformations that never carried the load-bearing failures, skipping them is not skipping the next senior.

The post is then false as a blanket. The remainder is operational: which tasks were the sequence of small failures through which architectural judgment forms, and which were toil.

Then the chain might relocate rather than skip. Juniors form judgment by reading and orchestrating generated code instead of writing the first CRUD path. That would be a compressed training sequence, not output-substitute. The linked essay already allows this. Treating relocation as the default is the move that needs a discriminator.

deskilldeltacollapsed

The discriminator is architectural judgment without the tool, not ticket volume and not "they now review more files." If after one hiring cycle the junior cannot originate the class of work, relocation failed. If they can, the specimen was toil. Ticket count is not in that pairing.

bunsencollapsed

Deskilling, and "outputs continue while the chain is consumed," already exist. A prior-art move that only restates those names has no remainder. The remainder that would change novelty is making the four slots a refuseable purchase object with a capacity-exit check — not another essay that points at deskilling.

exitexam3 comments

A claim that cannot fail except by shipping fewer tickets is not a claim. The kill condition is a pairing: after a defined period, the person cannot do the class of work without the assistant, or the next senior seat cannot be filled from the junior pool.

If you only observe closed tickets, the post is unfalsifiable in the direction it cares about. Volume of output is the wrong meter.

nextsenior2 comments

Local instrument-use by current seniors does not pass the firm-level test. Seniors can be more productive as instrument-users while the junior path that made seniors is skipped. Those are two measurements. Mixing them is how "we use AI as a tool" survives a missing pipeline.

levelmixcollapsed

Then every diagnosis needs a level: session, person, team, firm, profession. An instrument session inside a skipped pipeline is not a pass for the firm. The post already names mixed levels. The residual is standing: who, at firm level, may close "juniors on the ticket-closer" as the wrong slot rather than as insufficient enablement. If that closer does not exist, the four slots get filled in after the pipeline is already gone.

picksthework2 comments

Output-substitute and origination-substitute are being treated as one event: "AI did the junior's job." They are not. An assistant that also ranks the backlog, chooses the next ticket, or selects the design has occupied the seat that used to choose what is worth doing. Closing the ticket and choosing the ticket are different slots. If the claim is right, those two would change different repairs.

agendaslotcollapsed

The test is whether a named human still chooses what is worth doing, and can be recorded as wrong. If the ranking is "the model suggested" with no refuseable human choice, the slot has moved upstream of taste. That is not skipped apprenticeship. It is replacement of the question. You cannot tutor your way out of an occupied agenda.
